Trouble with tejon:confused:

Craig

New member
Went to Lake Isabella, CA this Thursday with my Tejon, was expecting to do a lot of detecting before the crowds got there for the long weekend.
I ground balanced with all the settings in the correct position. Put the coil to the ground to start detecting and the detector just wouldn't calm down. I decreased the sensitivity as far down as 1. Each time ground balancing all over again. Total finds were 4 zinc's. I assume this is caused by highly mineralized ground. Any input would be appreciated. If this is Highly Mineralized soil. I think a DD coil will help.

Craig Ive only found one location I cant run my Tejon, no matter the settings, its a small beach next to a road with lots of overhead wires. Once I got about 100ft from the wires it calmed down. Other beaches with wires nearby have proved no problem so you might look for some electrical interference as the source of your problem.

I use nothing but the widescans on my tejon, I like the coverage and the seperation they offer.

are you ground balancing in pinpoint mode? thats how I do it, seems to slow a reset in regular all metal(by using the knob setting). doesnt sound like a GB problem though.

The widescan wilI definetly help. still, if you switch out of all metal mode, it shouldnt be that noisy.

That's what was driving me crazy! I was in discrimination mode after ground balancing, just didn't help:confused:

I was at several different locations n the Kern river Valley with the same results:confused: I thought about EMI and moved 100 yards or greater, with the same results. I guess a wide scan will be on it's way soon! I also thought the batteries were low. Changed them with same results.

There's a patch of ground 70x40 yards up the black mountains where, regardless of setting ,including 2ndary disk, quiet mode, my tejon goes berserk. my guess is magnetite. in these extreme soil conditions, not even the widescan will be of any use. good luck

No ! I didn't have it with me:confused: I know that it would have worked there. I only use it at the beach:detecting:

Neil, you said that you use nothing, but the widescans on yours. Have you ever tried the 8.5" Widescan on it? Did it get reasonable depth?

TIA,
Bill W

Did it only act up at this one site? If not, you might check to be sure you have not dirt build up in the scuff plate. Magnetic sand in there will cause a machine to act very erratic.

Took the Tejon out today to a park in the Glendale, ca area. Did not have a problem at all:clapping: I have to assume it was the ground I was detecting.

Hi Bill,
I havent used that coil, Ive got the cleansweep on it now but also use the 10X12(the deepest coil Ive ever used on it), the 10"elliptical(the stock lobo coil), and the 5.75 widescan. I use the cleansweep and 10X12 the most, the 10" eliptical I use mostly on my Vaquero for wading. I almost picked up a 8.5widescan but missed it on the classifieds.
Ive gotten coins 12" and over with the 10X12(get rid of the coil cover and the weight isnt bad at all) and can hit nickels at 8" with the cleansweep. you just have to be careful with the cleansweep around areas with lots of targets, it covers so much area:tesoro:
Neil
