trouble with tall grass

I am relatively new to metal detecting so I am still learning the ins and outs. I have a Land Star and when I am in either tall or thick grass, I have trouble getting good signals. If I bump a thick patch of grass, my detector beeps. Does anyone have any pointers when it comes to detecting in tall and or thick grass?

Hi Mike, from experience I know that most of my machines will false if bumped into objects. About the only way I know to detect the tall or long grass is to use a brushcutter first, if your allowed to that is, or wait for a fire to go through. Sometimes a high sensitivity setting will also be the cause of falsing. Using a MONO coil is also an option as you can move it forward and backwards and in any direction which helps because of the whole coil being sensitive, as opposed to the knife like detection area of the DD coils. Hope this helps. HH regards Nugget.:detecting:

Hi mike:

I normally stay out of the tall grass, but if I must, I sometimes switch to my 4" coil...It is SLOW going, but it cuts through the grass and weeds better...The VLF machines are notorious for falsing when bumped against a hard object....Just have to live with it....I turn my SENS down to about 10 o'clock when in the tall stuff...loose a little depth (about 1-1 1/2"), but makes life a little better...I sometimes will stomp down an area, then detect it....Best bet, is like nugget suggested...get the owner to mow it, or get permission to weed wack it or something (those hand held metal dual-edged weed wackers you swing back and forth)...

Like BH_Landstar said, If you really want to go there, try using a smaller coil, I get in around some brushy spots from time to time and this helps, but there isn't much you can do about the grass, except find a way to work slowly around it.
