trouble with shaft length

I had posted this same question on the main Explorer forum with no response, so I'll try it here.
Have just received new explorer and have had trouble adjusting length of detector to fit in case that came with it. The pig-tail seems to bind in the shaft and will only allow detector to collapse to 49". Specs say that the detector should shorten to 43". As it is now, it takes a great deal of effort to stretch case over detector. I figured that others have overcome this problem on this forum. Thanks for any suggestions. Wade

I had the same problem. Bought the huge Royal Blue bag from Kellyco. Now, not only do I have my assembled unit in the bag, I also have all my digging tools, spare battery, headphones, etc. The bag has several internal pockets and a shoulder sling that makes it great for hiking into the woods.

When you put the coil wire into the channel of the lower rod, start at the detector end first. Take the wire right at the beginning of the coiled section and start it into the top of the channel and work your way to the coil end. This puts as much of the "excess wire at the coil end as possible and minimizes the "excess" at the detector end. This allows the assembled machine to collapse down to the stated 43" in length. The drawback to this is you have a big loop of wire at the coil that can catch on objects when you're searching. Work with it a bit and see if you can find a happy medium, or if you'd be happier with a different detector case. Hope this info helps, Mike.

If you remove the cable from the shaft you can achieve the 42" total length. (Not practical) A few minutes with a tape measure and a disassembled machine will tell you it just won't work with the cable installed. Mine collapses a little more now that the "new" is worn off the cable. Check with your dealer and see if it's OK to put a little talcum powder or the like on the cable to keep it from binding as easily.
Hope this helps

I have the same problem. I sighted down the bottom shaft and observed what appeared to be a slight bow near the bottom of the shaft. As the shaft is shortened the top and bottom shaft bind as it becomes shorter. I can make the shorter length, but it takes considerable force and the top shaft cuts into the finish of the bottom shaft as it nears the bottom position where the bow is greatest.
