Trouble with newly mod'ed elite meter

When you say unstable is the threshold also unstable in disc?? Set the sensitivity to auto outside and the threshold and meter should be stable if the coil is held off the ground so it dont see anything.
If it is not check you connection to see they are all tight, then if the threshold is not take the meter off and hook the coil right to the control box if it still does it you are picking up some interference or there is a problem with the Elite.
Now if this meter come with a new Elite it is a latter model and when he did the mod there is one ressistor that is differnt in the early versa the later one and it could be the wrong one got put in. The other option is when he put the kit in he didnt do the internal callibration before it was reassembled. When you wave a dime or quarter in front of it how low and how high can you get the meter to read?? if it dont read any higher than 140 then I would suspect a wrong ressistor or it wasnt calibrated internaly before assembly.

Eddie, Here is a copy of the email I sent you this morning in case you didnt get it. In addition to what I wrote below , make sure your batteries are good . wildherre

Eddie, Sounds like you are new to the Sovereign . It
can be very confusing when you first start using one.
1. The meter will only read correctly in disc mode.
2. When a Sovereign nulls from iron or swinging to
fast you will get a -494 type reading. If while
swinging you have a constant null & - 494 /495 reading
you either need to slow your swing, turn down your
sensitivity or use a smaller coil.
3. Every time the Sovereign beeps ,even from electical
interference you will get a reading on the meter.
When testing get out side away from any interference ,
turn the sensitivity all the way down(clockwise) and
then calibrate the meter. If dont have any
interference the meter will stay on 180 until you
swing over another target, In most cases you will
have some interference & the meter number & threshold
tone will keep jumping from one number to another. To
over come this you must do the Sovereign wiggle
http://www.geocities.com/sovereignmods/wiggle.html
over your target to get a constant tone & meter ID. Go
by the tones & only look at the meter afer you are
doing the wiggle over a target. Afer awhile the
wiggle will become second nature & you wont even
realize you are doing it.. Usually it take 2 or three
wiggles to get the meter to read the right number ..
Give this a try & see if it helps.. wildherre

OK Ken,
Guy's.
I took apart the meter and bench calibrated according to
Wildherres instruction and now....NOW...
It's Working like a gem.
Must have been the shipping.
Anyway,
I bench calibrated it to 180 with the adjust knob on back straight up.
Used a quarter to field calibrate at 180.
Now even when i power off the unit it holds calabration real nice.
But tell me..Is it ok to have the calibration 180
with the knob on the back at 12.00?
Ken...Thanks for the fine work.
And thanks for the replys everybody.
btw -found a quarter in my yard when trying to resolve this issue.LOL

Your meter was calibrated on 3 different Sovereigns 2 XS s & a GT, all were within 8 digits of each other . I have found nearly all Sovereigns/Coil combinations to be within about 10 digits of each other on a 180 meter. The only time I have seen one farther out of range than that there was usually a bad coil connector or bad solder joint on a connector. If you actually had to change your calibration by 40 digits I suspect a problem somewhere . I once calibrated an after market meter to work on a Sovereign & had to go with different a resistor value than what was supposed to work . I got it to work OK but a few months later when I shortened the meter cable I found a cold solder joint. After shortening the cable I had to rescale the meter using the resistors that were supposed to be in it all along .. Come to think of it , when I tested your stock meter after receiving it to make sure it worked, the range was not nearly centered on my Sovereigns. Normal is about 460-640, Seems like yours was like 380-560..Maybe its just that much difference in Sovereign control boxes.. wildherre
