Trouble with my ACE 250

John D.

New member
I have had my 250 for about two months an I hunt with it nearly every day for an hour. or so. Sometimes I have trouble getting it to come on; I have to depress the ON button two or three tomes to get the machine on. Once it is on it works just fine, however today it would not work with the earphones. I checked the earphones on my 1350 and they worked just fine. By the way I am using Garrett earphones.
Is this typical or do I have a defective ACE? Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Your Friend,
John D.

I would definitely say you got one of the factory freak's.I'm quite sure if you got ahold of Garrett they would be more than willing to fix it for you!
I love mine, I guess when I turn mine on it just a quick touch and she's working.
Good luck!!!!

I think its going to need a trip to the shop..off and on buttons are known to wear out after years of hunting not weeks...Write up a note on whats wrong with it and Garrett will have it purring in no time..

Sounds like you have a slight problem. Contact Mary at maryp@garrett.com and she will take care of the problem.

That on/off button can be finicky. When you try to power up, hold it in place. If it didn't work, wait 30 seconds then again, hold the power button. This might correct the situation. The machine cannot be turned on immediately after it has been shut off. You have to wait a bit.

As far as the headphones go, try the unit with another pair with the 1/4 inch jack first, to establish if it is the headphones or female connector on the unit. The connectors on the headphone typically do wear out on the wire just before it turns into a male connector, or just before it enters the headphones. I have repaired many myself buying a 1/4 inch jack from Radio Shack.

Also, I've had at least two pair of Garrett earphones that went tits up. I should have sent them back but never got around to it.

Dunno how freaky thi is, but my ACE250 has been doing the EXACT same two things.
Often I have to pull one battery out and replace it to get the unit to turn on. It's been doing this since new.
Also, when my headphone plug is rotated all the way so the wire is facing the housing, NO SOUND. Turn it a hair and it's fine. Obviously some bad jacks at the factory. I am waiting for it to fail completely before acting w/Garrett, as I don't wanna be w/out my ACE!...Love it

I have a large set of Garretts, probably about 9 years old that need a new 1/4 in plug. I use lighter ones, and for about $7.00 I can get a nice set of Koss Phones with a volume switch. If it breaks...oh well. I just buy another. They do get a lot of wear and tear. One year I bought a set of $18.00 Radio Shack with the warranty. During that time, I replaced them 8 times. A much cheaper deal if you factor in the postage too.

I want to get one of those new light weight that Garrett has for 2006. I recently talked to Mary, and they didn't have any in stock at the time. I presently have 3 pairs as back-ups in the car, ready to go.

Follow this link and send the form with your coil/detector. Pretty quick turnaround. Be sure to list a daytime phone as they will call you and tell you what repairs will need to be made and the cost.

Yeah I use the lighter ones ( especially in summer ) with the in-line volume. They work fine and cost next to nothing. I saw a yellow pair the other day that would perfectly match the Feller but they had no volume control. Thought I was going to make a fashion statement but it didn't pan out. :)

I have had problems with the on/off button on my ACE 250. Didn't know if it was a problem or it was designed that way? If I turn it on and turn it right back off, I have to wait about a minute before I can turn it back on the second time. Seems like it has to get it's little electronic ducks back in a row or something? Jim
