Hi folks,

I'm very new to detecting and today encountered a problem with my Xterra 70. After fiddling with the settings the detector developed a constant, relatively low volume bip, bip, bip, bip...............................................................bip, bip.....Also the numbers displayed were occasionally jumping about even without moving the detector. I turned it off then back on - same thing. Earlier that day its performance seemed to be lacking with only large items found and the beeps reduced to choppy beeps instead of the usual distinct ones. Does anyone have any clues???

Thanks & cheers,
Bryan.

I assume you have tried he basics...new batteries...be sure coil connector is tight on the control box....noise cancel. If all that doesn't work, try a different coil if you have one. It might be a bad coil.

Good luck

Sounds like it may be falsing. Check that there is no debris in the coil cover and that you have your mobile phone switched off.It can interfer with the detector sometimes. also turn down the sensitivity just to check that is is not that. It is possible that you may have been near a source of electrical interference as well, ie a mobile phone repeater station, high powered power lines eta.
Good luck with the 70.
Mick Evans.

Reset the detector to the factory settings and start over. While holding the menu button down turn the machine on. After you see FP on the screen your good to go. Without adjusting anything see how that works?

I'm thinking that you might have your Sensitivity set too high.

Thanks everyone, it appears the problem was most likely a combination of power line interference and the sensitivity set too high. The problem that remained from earlier in the day has proven to be a touch embarrassing; it seems my son borrowed the headphones to listen to some music and adjusted the volume knobs down on the head set. I hadn't even noticed the volume knobs. Appears to be working fine now. Despite this rather fumbling beginning I have managed to find a reasonable number of coins and other items that have pleased me greatly. Good forum by the way!
Thanks again,
Bryan (Down Under).

I know the problem has been solved, but I thought I'd contribute my two cents anyway. For me, regularly repeating series of "bips" have been associated with electrical fences (powered by an electrical pulse of some sort - I don't know the specifics). The closer I get, the louder the bips and the only cures are to move further away or ask the farmer to cut the power for a while. It is possible to detect even with this interference, but it is a real challenge to cope with the falsing, especially since it always (for me at least) fall somewhere in the positive range.

my problem with the x-70 today was a little different. It was just dead!!!!!!!! My hunting buddy stretched the springs in the battery box- works fine now. Am getting ready to take a trip to W.V. in a couple of days, and thought I wasn't going to have use of my detector. I was more than a little bummed out!!!!! Gary

I can't take credit for this as my brother pointed it out to me...... when traveling with the X-Terra, I have a tendency to sit it down on it's side. (tough enough to make it stand up in the field. let alone a moving vehicle) Anyway, Bill pointed out to me that when I lay it down with the battery door facing up, the bumps in the road might be allowing the weight of the batteries to reduce the tension in those springs. I have had to carefully "stretch" mine, as you indicated you did. And since paying more attention as to how it was placed in the back of the pickup, (battery door down) I've not had any more problems. Might be worth the effort. HH Randy
