trouble detecting dimes

New member
I myself is new to the e-trac. i just got it yesterday and I am having trouble. i put a Quarter, a dime, nickel, and a penny on the ground about 2 feet away from each other and and it picks it up no problem. then I buried the the coins in holes about 3-4 inches deep and the e-trac picks up the quarter and the penny and the nickle but for some reason I'm having trouble picking up the dime. It makes a sound but not the same as if it was on the surface. do you have any input on that? I don't know what i am doing wrong and I don't want to miss out on passing up dimes( especially if its a silver one). thank you and God bless.

Were they silver coins, or newer stuff, did you compact the soil when you buried the coins? What were your settings etc. A lot of help here on this forum if you were to be more specific.

The e-Trac is usually hot on dimes,

No i did not check to see if there was anything else in the hole and I just cut a little plug out and put the plug back without compacting the soil. does it help a lot by compacting the soil? I guess it would of help to see if there was something else in the hole but I'm pretty sure there was not. Its was a new dime and i was in the default coins mode.

when you dig and disturb the dirt you will have a problem it is called a halo effect
try to detect the coins in quickmask it should pick it up

I would say there was another target in the hole. Targets that were in the ground for along time get the halo effect and when you dig those, sometimes the signals changes. I can air test coins and they are about the same in the ground when I plant them. Dimes are easy to pickup and read very consistant if laying flat in the hole...Did you lay them flat?

hi bustins4, im also a new e-trac user, been using it since last weekend. trust me, the e-trac will pick up dimes at 3-4", you will not miss them. you might have your sensitivity cranked down, or you are "blanking". if you pass your coil over something that the detector reads in the "black" area, the detector will blank out for a second. also like the guys said the coil might be on edge or tilted. which will change the reading a bit.

from what ive found in the short time ive used the detector is everything is not "cut and dry". you need to get out there with it, listen to it, try to understand it, and dig dig dig....thats how to get a feel for what its trying to tell you. also, dont get overwhelmed by the information it is going to tell you....its kinda like listening to someone go into every detail telling a story....everything is the "long version"

my old detector: "beep"

e-trac: "theres something down there about 5" or so it sounds like close to a coin it has a conductivity like a silver qarter but there is something not quite right about it, from a certain angle it doesnt sound as smooth and the ferrous level is hard to get a good feel on and there might be some iron scraps laying nearby as well." (i dug yesterday, it was some kind of bottle top) "there is so much junk here....junk everywhere...im going to tell you all about everything that is see here and i see A LOT!"

...and so on....

also, at first i was critical of it (just in my mind) until i used it a few times. it had to prove something to me. that it was better than what i had (a whites 6000). im happy with it. it is a better detector.

im just trying to have fun with it....its a very interesting machine. good luck and have fun with yours.

moonshine GREAT analogy buddy had me

bustins4 just keep at it, i run my ET pretty hot when i can and i can almost hear a dime coming, in fact i dig more dimes than any other coin!!! this is a VERY deep detector!!!
