trouble cgetting the XS in its case

I have never yet been able to figure out how to get my XS in its case. There seems to be too much resistance when trying to collapse it. Any suggestions on how to get in the case?

pull the lower rod out and turn it 90 degrees and put it back in. The coil will not lie flat and it will easily fit in the case.

Thanks Wally. I tried that, but it still won't fit. I do have the Sunray stand/1/4-1/2 adaptor on one end, and the Minelab coil stand on the other. It seems that the only solution is to take them both off. If so, I'd rather go without the case instead of all that disassembly and reassembly.

is that the free case kelly co gave out or an oficial minelab case?

The Sunray stand makes it tough but it will zip closed.

It's from Kelly Co., but it has the Minelab logo on it -- a 2-sided flat thing when zipped; 2 flat sides connected by a seam when unzipped.

The free bag (black and grey) that I got from Kellyco was worthless. The only way to fit the detector was to remove the lower rod and rotate the coil. I didn't want to disassemble the detector everytime I put it in the bag. I also wanted the detector to sit "upright" in the bag. So one of their employees went out to the warehouse and checked out their deluxe padded bag with a shoulder strap (that was something else I wanted) to make sure the entire detector would fit without disassembling. Well, it sure does, and it will also hold a ton of extra stuff as well like headphones, spare battery pack, towels, aprons, scoop, etc. I hated to have to pay another $69, but now I carry everything in one bag. By the way, I called every local dealer in the Washington DC area to try and find a bag. Out of about 14 calls I left, only 3 bothered to return my call. And only one stocked a bag I could look at, but it was the flat type from Minelab which I assume is the bag you were talking about.

It wont fit unless you take it apart( thats what the kelly people told me) bummer too much trouble and I didnt want it rattlin around scratching itself up.Mine had no logo.Sold it to a guy withan xlt for 40 bucks,,,cs

The Explorer will fit in the Black (flat) Minelab brand case. The first thing that you must do is to remove the lower rod along with coil from the detector (coil connection must be undone). Make sure that the coiled part of your coil cable is the only part that is not in the groove of the lower rod. If some of the uncoiled section of the cable protrudes (even an inch), this will cause binding when collapsing the detector small enough to fit in the bag. If you find that this is the case, remove the cable from the groove of the lower rod and reposition. Start at the top, and leave no excess portion of the uncoiled part of the cable. Use a small amount of dish soap in the grove to help slide the cable into place. Reconnect the lower rod and coil to the detector making sure that the coil is 90 deg. to normal operating position. Hopefully you will be able to collapse the detector smaller (it's still a tight fit). I hope this helps. Sorry if it's confusing.

Thanks Thom. I'll call Kelly. Please let me know if the Deluxe padded bag has any brand name.

David,
I am looking at the Kellyco receipt for the bag. The item number is 305-SPB, but the description simply reads "carry bag, long padded deluxe blue". The bag is also in their catalog, but it looks like my wife pitched it (wonder why?), so I can't give you the page number. Anyhow, I think there is another $69.95 bag in the catalog, but this is the only one with a shoulder strap in addition to the carrying handles and is royal blue in color, a perfect match for the control box housing cover that came with my XS. I was out of town yesterday but purchased a collapsable digging shovel with case at a surplus store. This item will also fit nicely into the bag.
