Trivia: Sad and embarassing

I learned today that the first pull tab was introduced in 1962 by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company for Iron City Beer. Two years prior, the company president was on a picnic and forgot his can opener, which started the search for a workable solution. And to think that as a teenager I heavily supported that company. Never thought I'd be embarrassed to be from Pittsburgh.

I like pull tabs. If they are around there is gold to be found. If I can't find any, somebody like me has already cleaned the place out. Dig them!

Funny how such a small event (such as forgetting your can opener) in one person's life can have such far reaching effects in the lives of so many others.

Oh, I do dig them! Awhile back, I had an idea to work with a local jeweler to make full sized 10K pull tabs as a necklace trinket for sale to MD'ers, but I never got up the nerve to risk the funds on the project.

With the price of scrap Al, I am seriously considering keeping all my pulltabs (and canslaw) and periodically cleaning them up with my pressure washer to take to the recycler. I mean, if I've already dug it and carried back to the truck, why not?

But yeah, I hate them too. And thanks for that piece of history, VBDave.
