Trip to Gettysburg

I'm planning a trip to Gettysburg Pa. next week 22 thru 26 to visit the battlefield and other points of interest and was wondering if anyone in that area would be willing to get up with me and do some detecting for relics.
I have only been at it for a little over a year, but really enjoy this hobby.
I realize that this request is probably often asked, but thought I might get lucky and find a willing partner to make a short hunt together.

Thanks in advance for any responses,
Felix

Good luck to you and stay WELL away from the National Battlefield Park, even if you only have your detector in the car and don't take it out of the car or talk about it around the park. The NPS is less than happy about MD anywhere near the park.

Make sure the batteries are out and detector is locked up in in your car trunk or locked in a case while you are at the park.

Even with your detector "disabled" and locked up, they still won't be in good humor if they find that you have one. No metal detectors means NO metal detectors! They take them as seriously as firearms at GNBP. After all, it is widely considered as the most hallowed ground in the USA.

There are alot of farms in that area. Outside of the battlfield. Get permission from a farmer. Armys traveled all through that area. Good Luck.

I was at Gettysburg 2 weekends ago, it's a site worth seeing. My advice on the battleground...buy the audio CD and use your own car for a self-guided tour. I took the Battlefield Bus tour, which is very imformative...but you only stop twice and that's for about 10 minutes, hardly enough time to snap a picture. After the bus tour, the wife and I took the car around the same route and stopped at many spots (without the CD), then I got the real feel for the place. BE SURE to visit The Horse Soldier and Little Drummer Boy shops, you wouldn't believe the artifacts for sale, some Gettysburg related, some not.And visit the Jenny Wade house, supposed to be haunted. These guys are not kidding about the metal detector but you might get lucky and find a farmer who will let you hunt on his property. There are many square miles of area there that were involved in that 3 day battle and thousands of artifacts are still in the ground, I'm sure. I only wish I spent more than one day there, but we were on a schedule. Have fun, Ron

They will be certified by the park, know a lot, and you can get in or out of your own car as much as you want. We must have gotten out 10 times to look at everything. It was reasonable and the way to go.

Check with the metal detecting shop in town for hunting info.

Good Luck

I would advise you to either go north towards Carlisle, or south towards Frederick, MD, checking the creeks and crossings as you go. South has a better chance of hitting skirmish fodder. North has more camp and travel cast offs. If you head soth, you get the remains of the trail that both armies traveled. There is a lot more open space, and it is a bith farther from GNMP, so the residents are less guarded.
