Trigger in forward position and noisy

My MXT is fairly quiet with the trigger in the middle position and in relic mode, but if I push it forward it sounds like somebody is shaking a bag full of broken glass in my headphones. Is that normal? I been hunting with MXT for about a year and half now and since I relic hunt the middle position has always been fine. But, now I'm looking at doing some coinshooting for old coins and thinking that it would be nice to be able to use it with the trigger forward and not hearing the iron.

What you describe is normal. The C/J and Relic with the trigger forward use the same SAT setting and are noisier. The C&J and Relic Alternate search mode are identical in terms of mixed mode audio operation. The odd mode is Relic Primary (center position) search mode. The all-metal portion of the signal here uses a slower internally fixed S.A.T. speed. This S.A.T. speed tends to interact with EMI a bit less and therefore allows a higher GAIN setting to be used with stability and allows a slightly slower sweep speed. Rob

rcasio44 (aka Rob) said it all. These guys are the best and the best come to the rescue! :cheekkiss:

Remember, in the relic mode with the trigger forward, it operates just like any other discriminator with tone I.D. What I have found helpful is to turn up the disc (only as much as is absolutely necessary, ususally around 2) and turn down the threshold to almost (if not) silent. Run your gain as high as you can without falsing. In my experience, anytime you increase discrimination you will loose some depth so it becomes important to acquire the correct gain setting.

Two is always where I run my discrimination when I'm relic hunting. I've thought about turning down the threshold, but that usually makes me wonder if I won't be missing deep targets as I'm used to running with the threshold barely audible and listen for those blips that indicate a deep target. Guess if I'm coin shooting it'll be less important and will save my sanity if I turn down the threshold as you suggest.

If you are running with the trigger forward depth is not your priority, discrimination becomes your priority. The purpose for running with the trigger forward is so that you can discriminate without all of the chatter that you get from running in all metal mode. You always trade depth for discrimination.
