Tried to shorten my coil cable and failed

GunnarMN

New member
I just got the 8.5" Widscan, and it tested out about 1" deeper than the 7" coil but it came with a long cable , i figured that wont be so badd, but when i got it """ whooo it was long I had more cable sraped around the shaft than the detector weight, i had to shorten it , so i gave it a try , and found out i needed three hands, and tried 4 times to get it but i ended up melting the 5 pin conector and had it so every thing was touching everything els so i lost this one . cant put anymore money into it it coast me 90 bucks to learn a lesson . it is for sale on the accesories forum for 20.00 as a reparible . bran new. you really have to know what your doing when soldering , without a holder of some kind it gets really tricky

When I mod'ed my Compadre I had to soldier the coil connectors on and I know you do have to be very careful. I feel bad that you are going to be without your coil and the the money you paid for it. If you happen to have another connector or can get one I would be happy to soldier it for you & wouldn't charge you for doing it other than shipping back to you.

To solder a connection that small you need a decent solder station so that you can get in and out with the heat quickly. You have to flux the connections well before soldering with the right type of flux and hold the connector in a Panavise. It you don't do it everyday it is an accident waiting to happen.

Gunnar, send it back to Tesoro and tell them what length you want the cable at. For the small charge you can lessen the cost of the mistake. I plan on specking out the connectors and shortening all my cables. Just need to find time.

Gunnar!
Let SkiWhiz solder it for you bro! Don't sell it!
It's very easy to do and I'm sure he'll fix it up perfectly!

Pete

If you enjoy the hobby as much as I do the fun you have is priceless.

If I had the extra cash, I would go into the pottery business with you. It's such as shame you can't use your great talent at pottery making............ You have made some really neat pots etc.!!!!
Don't feel bad, cat nocked over my Musketeer a number of years ago I was modifying, just about all done and working, cat jumped on the table ......the Musky hit the floor, it was toast.
Recently air testing my Toltec, had the headphones on, dropped a coin onto thye floor, when I went to pick it up, the headphone cable pulled the control box onto the floor. It was toast.
I now strap everything down.

Too bad about the coil plug, the first time is always a btch. You do need little props to hold the connector and wire in position.............next time let me know if you run into a problem. I actually had a spare connector here.

I found a home for the coil and that person will fix it , I was contacted by a very kind member of this forum who has a 8.5" widescan in mint shape and he is giving it to me , I tell you that restores my faith in humanity it really lifted me out of the muck so i will get another one . the thing about being poor , is you have no credt no bank account , you live with your parents. if I had a credit card i could have got the part from the electric parts store but i cant even order things, so i have the coil on the way with a short cable . it helps me to hear the misshaps of others as i dont feel like I am the only one . you know i dont like to not pay for things, I still intend to pay the credet card about the dept as well gophers are digging so I will have to bear down . thanks broes And by the way i Watched some Utube videos on sodering , and i wish i had looked at them before i started because i was doing it all wrong but i had it all together and then forgot the sleve so i had to start over and it went downhill from that point

Gunnar,

I "goofed" the first time I soldered too. How I fixed the "goof" = I wrapped the connector in a towel and then just snugged it in my bench vise. That was my "third hand" I was then able to hold the solder and maneuver the wires to wire back up my meter. If we don't make mistakes how on earth are we ever going to learn? " You made the decision to sell it and "chalked it up" as experience. I want to give a big "THANK YOU" to the forum member that donated the 8.5" widescan to Gunnar. Now Gunnar, get back out there and make some more videos for us to watch. :drinking:

I am somebody here could have gotten you a new connector and if you cannot solder it I am sure some here could have done it.
Biggest problem we all have is rushing to do things.
I recently was told I do not need to wrap my wired around the rods....
I was shown another way to do it and will be trying that. Just tie wrap the wire straight up the shaft and loop it a few times to take up the slack near the handle.
Keep it from moving around and it will be fine.
Also it will not set up from heat and look like a spring.

Here is a thread with pictures about doing the coil wire like you are talking about http://www.findmall.com/read.php?18,1651108,1651176#msg-1651176
