I found a very thin copper button about the diameter of a Lincoln cent that had this backmark, but no markings at all on the front. Does anybody know the time period that such backmarks were used? I'd love to get an idea of it's date.

I don't have my book with me, but I would guess early 1800's - 1840's. I am sure someone who has book in front of them will know for sure and chime in. They are civilian buttons commonly called flat buttons or coin buttons. Usually, these are found around colonial to civil war era sites. You should make a point to hit that site a little harder and maybe next post will be a military button or old coin!.........Aaron
