Traveling with Explorer

My wife and I are going to Florida to visit relatives. I plan to hit the beach for a day or to and wonder about taking the Exp on the plane. Any advice? Thanks.

We flew to California for Christmas from Seattle and I took the Explorer and a Whites as carry on and never had a problem. What I did was break them down and I had a Whites hard case for an old machine. I stripped it of all the foam and relined it to fit the Explorer and the Whites including the loops. I put my charger and battery's and digging implements in my regular luggage and then I put an itemized list taped to the top of the case and left it unlocked. Worked great and it fits in the overhead. Hope this helps, we flew Alaska Airlines but I would check and make sure your Airlines doesn't have a problem with a carry on for it.

When I went to Michigan last year for a forum hunt I brought 2 MD's with me on the plane. I took the batteries out of both units and wrapped both machines in bubble pack in a large duffle bag. I put a note in the bag saying: "contains 2 unpowered metal detectors" and left my cell number on it in case they had a problem. I also put a note in the bag with all my digging tools explaining what they were. When I pick up my bags at the airport, there was a note inside saying "thank you Joe!" with a TSA sticker on it. So, I guess they appreciated the heads up. :)

Good luck!

yeah hand carry it on plane. have batteries out of detector. I use a pelican case - works great!

I didnt have a problem this past weekend. I went to Kansas City with my Coin Strike and custom hipmounted Explorer XS. I really thought they would be worried about the XS. I have the display mounted to a electonics project box (where the new battery pack is).

I checked them in my suitcase.
