Vacationing in Cancun Mexico in March.Any tips on flying with a detector and sand scoop? Also any beach hunting tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Never flown with detector and scoop before. I have a buddy that has a few times and with no problems.
I learned from one of the best, use your tide chart and get to the beach 2 hours before the low tide and follow the tide down. When you find pockets/concentrations of coins on the beach working that area up and down the beach parallel with the water can be very productive. The low tide line next to the water can be very good also, and as the tide starts coming back in it can bring targets back up on the beach.
You will have 2 low tides in a 24 hour period, I would try my best to hunt them both. I, along with 2 buddies hunt both low tides and sometimes we were on the beach until 1 or 2 am. Just depends on when the tides are.

Good luck, I wish I was going, we are expecting possibly 12 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.

Check the scoop, and MD rod/shaft, and carry the coil and control box onboard with you. Much less likely to get thrown around and damaged.
In Cancun the sand is soft. You will find many coins in the dry sand. The water is the best place for the goodies. I did better in shallow. Hunt the lo tides, if possible. The water is calmer up north, rougher down south. Hit it all. HH Gayle

Thanks for the input guys.I don't have a travel scoop I can break down so I'm gonna pack my small sand scoop with the 12" handle.Gonna try to get in as much tectin as I can in the early morning, hope the tides cooperate.

Be carefull down there.. I have a friend that is going also and he said that detectors are not allowed and after dark you want to be inside because the crime is bad there.. Keep your eyes open for anything!!!

I am leaving for Cabo tomorrow and have hunted there a fair bit, my safety tips are don't be the first on the beach in the morning or the last off in the afternoon. When a local asks if you find anything "Mucho Basura" and laugh, it means much garbage. Do not forget to take bottled water with you that is really important. Work the wet sand from high tide mark to low tide and in the water depending on your machine.as the dry is loaded with pull tabs and bottle caps you will find rings in the dry but not as efficient use of time..
I learned this from a message Cupajo posted and it works, go sloooow and listen for faint tones, I hunt in All metal.
You will find the jewellery, look for the hotels where the activity is I.e. lots of tourists , then look for the hotels where the big buck tourists stay.

I'll be taking my Whites beach hunter ID with the 9.5 floater on it. Haven't found any gold with this machine yet,but I'm remaining optomistic. We're staying in a 5 star resort [thanks to a family member that owns a timeshare there] so hopefully good things will end up in my scoop.

Be really careful! My drummer and his son flew down to dive at cancun 15 years ago, they were murdered for forty dollars, it was in the news. it took two years to find there bodys. so please be really really careful. It's even worse now. As he said don't be the first or last person on the beach. stay inside at night. These people are butt broke and will rob you in a heart beat. your life means nothing to these people. Go but be on the alert. I can't stress how important watching who, and how many people are around you can be. so have fun but be damn careful, Mexico is a fun place but very dangerous if your in the wrong place at the wrong time. Oh and a friend of mine who speaks very good spanish said it would be a good Idea to insure your detector before you go, in Mexico if they want it they can take it and there is nothing you can do about it, our laws don't apply. So good luck, Gene

I've spent a fair amount of time vacationing in Mexico and my wife and I tend to vacation off the beaten path - no all inclusives or itinerary, just grab a rental car and head out to find some adventure. We have never had any major issues in Mexico but we also used common sense to avoid problems before they can ruin our vacation. Bad stuff happens everywhere and Mexico is no exception. As for Cancun it is basically a Mexican Disney World, very much an artificial tourist destination and very much a controlled environment from what I could see.

Go, have fun and don't let the Tequila influence your good judgement.

Via Con Dios,
