Now that I am finally able to beat the 7 inch depth barrier, Id like some advice on how to deal with lots of iron/trash. Chris as well as others had mensioned that finding coins in trash is a more important issue than raw depth, and now that I have more experiance, virtualy every site that I find the really old coins at has a ton of trash.
I have found that I need to slow way down with my swing and only progress forward about an inch or two at a time. I've tried lowering the sensitivity and using the fast option and that seems to improve things. Ive tried using the audio 1 option and I must be missing somthing. all it does is blend the signals together and desensitize my hearing with the constant sound. In dry conditions Ive had some luck with finding silver masked by iron by cranking up the sensitivity to 30. i dont know how or why that helps, but it has been successfull in the dust. I made a discrimination pattern that cuts out all but the top left corner of iron signals, foil, pulltabs and crown caps. normaly I run wide open IM-16, but i can swich to that screen when I start getting audio information overload.I probably miss a few but by swiching back on iffy ones, I probably dont miss much.
Mike from the dealership where I bought my machine got me to start thinking 'when in doubt, dig it out'. I had gotten myself into the habit of only digging things that had to be a coin. Now I try to only not dig what I'm certain is junk. I want to leave a site with my arms tired from digging holes, my junk bag full of trash, my pockets with a few relic type non-coin keepers, and hopefully no evidence that I had ever been there in the first place.
So I'd like some advice from all you fellow junkyard dogs if your willing to give up your secrets.
