Trashy Areas

Hi Guys,
I've done about 2 hours of testing the EX1 in super trashy areas. I could not get the explorer to have a good threshhold no matter what I did ( I'm still using the 7.5" coil). I decided to try Iron Mask -16 with ferrous tones. It cuts down on some of the high pitched iron tones, but it seems like the falsie iron signals still generally sound like coin hits. I suspect that if one were to listen to falsie vs. actual coin hits, he could find some very subtle distinctions that he could use to tell them apart from each other. I don't know that though. What do you guys think about this hunting scenario of using IM -16 (all metals mode), ferrous tones, and looking for subtle distinctions between iron false signals and coin signals? Is it practical to use IM -16?
Mike

im-16 with ferrous sounds works well in some areas, but you're right, the high iron falses sound a lot like coins. others with more experience can explain this better, but in my opinion there are two tones higher than silver on the explorer. neither of them is a good target! it might depend on how you've set up variability, etc., but that's what i hear on mine. silver rings in exactly two octaves higher than threshold. the highest shrieks are gonna be iron - dig 'em if you want to learn what's there, but if you hear that tone that's two octaves above threshold, that's a nonferrous target and you've got to dig it! just one user's thoughts. hh.

I usually dont go lower than -15, it still knocks out most nails, nothing wrong with hunting in a null, just go slowly.. the iron falses that give high tones you will get used to after a while..

Hey Neal,
That is very interesting. Since the user can determine what they want for threshold tone, I am wondering what setting you've chosen that is two octaves below the silver tone. I think that is a great idea for a reference tone since one can just sing (whistle or whatever) two octaves higher and check in his mind for silver. Actually, I guess what I can do is listen to a silver dime, and then try each threshold tone setting to see which one is two octaves below it. Thankyou very much!

Hey Jim,
Thanks again for the information. I feel better reading about how you guys have achieved the skill of hunting in trash-filled areas; it helps me to overcome my overwhelmed-depressed feelings about trashy areas. I expect that if I spend enough time on detecting in this type of environment, I will be able to use the potential of this machine.

mike,
it was probably a fluke more than anything, but i originally set up at threshold 5, variability 10, limits 10. try these settings & see if you don't get the two octave thing. also if you have a musical ear (i was a music major in college many years ago...) a nickel will ring in at an interval of a 4th above threshold. (Think "here comes the bride". that's a 4th) of course so will beavertails. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":("> good luck & hh.

Inline and could tell what note silver hit at ect ect.. I have never tried that but it would work good except that I have heard that deeper silver has a lower tone! Not sure though! Just thought I would pass the idea on =))

Hey Mike,
Yea, I saw that one too. That is a pretty creative idea. I think the explorer could be improved if it's circuitry could produce a readout that showed the average frequency of your target in Hertz. Or maybe its not that simple? I don't know.
