Trashy area coils (yeah another coil question)

Sorry if this seems repetitive but I'm new on this machine and on a tight budget. I'm only buying one more coil and the play money is gone!

A month under my belt with the E-Trac and I'm starting to see the light. I'm happy with the stock coil in the more open/low trash areas but I have a number of very old, very hard hunted and very trashy areas that are right near me. With the stock coil and as little time as I've had with the machine I've still seen finds in the proverbial "hunted out" spots but I can see where a small coil will be a benefit and I like the challenge of working those spots.

So I'm leaning towards a SunRay X-5 but also keep hearing good things about the SEF 8x6 and the 6" EXcellerator. I'll probably pull the trigger soon but just wanted to know other folks experiences. These parks are veritable pull tab, can slaw and iron trash mines but there's still coins in there. Usually finding them at around 4" to 7" in heavy infestations. The cherry pickings are long gone.

Is the SunRay the best bet for this environment or am I on the wrong track? The soil is pretty mild and the auto plus 3 typically is running 24 to 27.

The X-5 is the best trash coil I have used on the E-Trac. The quality control at Sun Ray is much better than the rest as well. I was surprised at how deep it is.

I have both the X-5 and the 6X8 SEF and use them often but in my opinion the X-5 is better at locking on to targets. I use the 6X8 in tot lots around fence rows places like that but around old houses where there are lots of nails and iron I go with the X-5. Old flower beds clothes lines anywhere there is stuble the X-5 works better for me because it is flat. Good depth on both but if I had to choose one it would be the X-5. What ever small coil you choose remember to SLOW down to reap the benefits. JMHO HH :minelab:

I own and like the 8X6 SEF as well but if I want to pick the good targets out of the worst of the worst trashy sites the Sunray wins hands down and with your good soil you will be amazed at the depth it will achieve....It also is very light weight

I agree with this but the 6x8 has a very distinct edge on depth. If I'm in an area with deeper coins and you need separation I start with the 6x8. If I'm in nail city out comes the 5" coil. The obvious problem with the 5" is the area of coverage. You can cover more ground with the 6x8. I sometimes tend to wander with the 5" coils because you are scanning such a small area its easy to miss an overlap or two (IMO).

I own and have used both the excelerator & the Sunray 5.5" coil. Both work great. Both are very sensitive & very deep.In my opinion you can't go wrong with either coil.I use the excelerator as my primary coil because I like to hunt trashy parks. I have found gold & platinum with it.

8x6 NUFF SAID........

I own both the SEF 8x6 and the X-5. I have had a few issues with the 8x6 with it being a little unstable at times and seems to lack sensitivity under some conditions, and then again other times seems to operate smoothly gets good depth and has the ability to pick targets out of some pretty bad trash conditions.

On the other hand the X-5 is exceptionally stabled works super great in any trashy conditions. I once had a target that turned out to be a 1875cc dime that was setting in some very tight trash, the ID was jumping all over the place but the audio was a very high pitched perfect silver reading. This coil will pick old silver out of some of the worst trash conditions imaginable. It gets great depth but the depth reading is not always that accurate. It is my pick for really bad trash conditions. Rick IL.

Ive had a lot of good finds with the excelerator in heavy trash and its depth capability is impressive. Anything I post online has been found with it. I am considering trying the Sunray 5.5 too out of curiosity. Hope this helps you!
