Delete Discussion Hi fellow members! I have been having some bad days swinging my 4 inch coil in my back yard. Since my wife is recovering from a dog bite on her hand from our Terrier I have been staying close to the house in case she needs me. My back yard must have been a junk yard that was covered over with about 4 inches of top soil. I have been finding all kinds of stuff from old square nails to foil and rusted metal pieces. I cant move more than a couple feet in the all metal setting without getting a hit. I nulled out all metal and pop tabs leaving me pennies and silver only to search for. I get quite a few hits in this mode. When I dig I end up with Aluminum cans and foil. I also am getting some iron and steel pieces out of the hole mixed in with the foil and cans. There also many square nails in the mix. The nails steel and iron are discriminated out and do not give any audible signals as it should be with my settings. The aluminum cans ring as a dime or on occasions a quarter. This is frustrating the heck out of me. I have only found 2 clad pennies and a nickle and have dug 50 or more holes in the back yard. I guess I should just give up on my back yard and front yard also since it is very trashy to. I figured with all the old square nails I am finding there ought to be some old coins but nothing but clad. If anyone has any suggestions on a better way to sweep these yards let me know. Thanks and keep in touch.

If your yard is THAT trashy, you may just have to suck it up and dig out all the trash first, taking whatever good finds you may come across as you go...I spent an entire year cleaning out my favorite honey hole..(Wood's Field) of can slaw and pull-tabs...I find much less of it now, but I am also finding the coins without having to dig all that trash...I set my SENS to 9 o'clock (4-6"), and my DISC fully CCW and hunted in DISC mode...It was frustrating as all heck, but I knew that when I got the trash out of there, I would be digging the coins...I know this may not be much encouragement, but it is an option...

Thanks for your help on clearing out the trash. After 4 pop cans that rang up as a dime I disc'd the dime out and the next detect I got showed it as a wheat penny and the VDI was right on also. My detector said it was 6 inches down so I dug and found it with my pin pointer. To my amazement I found it to be a 1954 Wheat. This is my first find in coins that was not clad. I am one happy camper with my Detector and my find. I know it is not much but it is a start.

hi titanman, in the past with every place i lived, i couldn't rest easy at night not knowing what was in the ground in my own yard! so i had to bite the bullet a few times and clear all the trash out of the ground before the good stuff would start to appear. if the topsoil in your yard was moved from somewhere else, there's no telling what's in the ground! the old square nails are always a good sign. i'm almost sure there's an old coin or two waiting for you in the yard. hh,

Wheat AND square nails in the same yard? I would leave nothing in my wake. [I'am earth friendly like that]. Square nails are such a good sign. You are lucky Sir...be stubborn.
