Transition from Explorer II to CTX3030

I recently bought a new CTX 3030 and was worried about the learning curve of going from an 8 year old Explorer II to the CTX. I searched a cut over hay field this past weekend for CW relics that I last searched with my Explorer II back on New Year's Day, and in much softer ground that day, I found nothing, but in 3 hours with my new CTX (17" coil), I found 9 three ring minie balls, 1 Williams cleaner bullet, 3 pcs of melted lead, and 1 Yankee eagle button. All of these finds came in rock-hard, dry soil, and the targets were 12 to 14 inches in the ground. I was surprised how similar the tones are on the CTX to the old Explorer, so if you're debating about upgrading like I did, it might open up some of your old places to some new and deeper targets. I can't wait until cooler weather and softer ground!

I also went from an Explorer II after 6 years to a 3030 last summer. While I know a did get a some real deepies at one spot that I know the Explorer counld'nt hit. At most of my pounded spots the Explorer left very little for the 3030 to find. The tones are similar but the 3030 lacks that silver warble we all love. The 3030 is a great unit ,it's just hard to justify spending all that $ when an Explorer can do almost as well in most most sites.

I'm finding that the Explorers didn't leave much behind. I have the CTX but my original XS is still my go to machine. I like the older style screen much better than the 12 line on the CTX, a quick glance at how the cursor is bouncing says much more than seeing the signal move a few pixels left or right.

Couldn't agree more!

I went with 605 to the same field over the weekend, and he's right about the depth. I now have his old Explorer, and I couldn't even get a reading on some of his bullets with the Explorer, and he has the old Explorer "dialed-in" for deep stuff. I found 1 3-ringer. Some areas of the country may not have as deep soil as where we are digging, but I am convinced that the 17" coil on the 3030 will do a lot more. I've seen it with my own eyes. I do want a larger coil for the Explorer II now. Any suggestions? Thanks.
