Chris I did the same thing back in July,I was never satisfied with the depth I was getting with the DFX. The Explorer will definitely beat my DFX in the depth dept. I found a copper coin with the Explorer at an old mill site that dates back to the late 1700s that was around a foot deep, I think the coin is a British Copper, I could never see a date due to the corrosion. There is no way I would go back to the DFX. I also purchased a 8" coil which does better in the trashy areas, and it has good depth also. As far as durability, I sent my Explorer back a couple of weeks back for a power up problem, which was covered under the warranty, aside from the power up problem I have had no problems. If you havent purchaded Andy Sabish book on Mastering the Explorer, do so. The book has a wealth of tips and tecniques that are invaluable for the Explorer owner. The early production Explorers had some cracking problems where the upper rod attached to the control box, but a recall was issued by Minelab and also a change in the plastic composition cured this problem as far as I know. Give the Explorer time, and try to not to git disgusted and I think you will like the machine. HH
