tracking

hi there just wondering does anyone here actually use tracking? ive never used it due to the fact that i also have a gp3500 gold machine and if i use it on that i also loose a lot of depth thanks nick

Hi, I also have an X-Terra 70. These are not my opinions but what do you think of these letters below from Willy? I hope it is not true, as I have never tried my X-Terra 70 for prospecting yet and obviously not in Tracking doing it. But he does say the X-Terra 70 is a better hunter otherwise which is good.

The reason why I'd like to get an MXT is because it is, basically, a superior detector for prospecting in bad ground. As a coin/ring/relic hunter, the XT 70 is the better detector, but it just doesn't have the 'balls' to deal with bad ground when nugget hunting. I tested both detectors side-by-side and have used both for doing all the above. I now really regret selling my MXT. ..Willy.

Oh, I'd definitely get a large DD coil for the MXT. As an aside, I tested both detectors using elliptical (basically 5x10") DD's and the MXT tracking was fast and accurate whereas the XT 70 really struggled, and often failed, to track the ground. The MXT could also be swung quite fast without problems whereas the XT 70 had to be swung slow.. otherwise the piss-poor ground tracking and slower SAT would cause the detector to go berserk. ...Willy.

For just nugget hunting, the White's GMT will handily best the XTerra 70 and MXT when looking for small gold. The MXT hits harder on 2-3 grain gold than the XTerra70 and will handle bad ground better. The XTerra70 will see smaller gold than the MXT. The XTerra70 IMHO is a better coin hunter than the MXT. The disc. mode on the MXT, though, seems to be more sensitive than the disc. mode on the XTerra70.
Just got back from the Coquihalla river and, while up there, did some side by side in-ground and above ground tests using different sized gold nuggets with the XTerra70, MXT, and GB2. I had a GMT a couple of years ago and base my GMT comments on what I observed using that detector. Overall, as a multipurpose detector, I'd say that the MXT has it over the XT70 in bad ground when prospecting. In better ground the XT70 would get the nod. ..Willy.

XTerra 70 w. 2 coils/rods FS/T (for an MXT)
About 3 yrs old, in good condition with a bit of wear on the touch-pads and a few light scratches on the screen. There's a bit of white silicone on the inner coil ring of the stock coil. Also comes with the HF DD elliptical coil and extra rod. The DD has had the coil cover sealed on around the edge with liquid PVC. $540 USD shipped in USA/Canada. Paypal add 3%. I will also trade for an MXT w. DD and stock coils. ..Willy.

I think I'll hang on to the detector for now.. things to see and people to do; don't want to hang around with thumb up posterior, waiting, when I could be out in the mountains detecting. ..Willy.

Sorry to highjack your thread Nick. I have an answer for you below, I hope someone can answer your question also here: "hi there just wondering does anyone here actually use tracking? ive never used it due to the fact that i also have a gp3500 gold machine and if i use it on that i also loose a lot of depth thanks nick"

I have used both the MXT and the X-70 at Ganes cr and I have to agree with you 100% that the X-70 out preforms the MXT in many ways.

Regarding the the MXT/XT70, when I say tough ground, I mean TOUGH ground; we're talking, if manually GB'ing, doing so every couple of feet. I'm well aware of the advantages and disadvantages of ground tracking vs. manual GB. The fact is, testing both detectors, with equivalent coils, with only one detector turned on at a time, yielded better performance with the MXT in the ground I hunt. It's just that simple.. the tracking was not "equal" on both detectors. That's like saying that a VW bug and a Corvette are both "equal" because they both have gasoline engines.. kinda ridiculous, eh? Even with the ground tracking disabled on both detectors (MGB on the XT70 and tracking locked on the MXT with a quick flick of the toggle to 'update' when needed) the MXT ran better (can you say "VSAT"? The XT70 DOESN'T have that feature). I've used manually GB'd detectors for nugget hunting for years and and the implied slam "the good separates the bad

Most people just don't realize how badly ground like that affects a detector. I have not hunted in anything like you have up there but have hunted the Rich Hill and GB areas a couple times with VLF's and its not easy. The Hypersat on the MXT is a godsend for bad areas but I preferred to juggle the Sensitivity and SAT controls myself where possible.

As you pointed out, performance in those conditions has no bearing on how a detector performs for most of us in the areas we hunt. I agree the X70 beats the MXT as an all 'rounder.

Willy, maybe you've answered this already, but have you used the 6 inch concentric HF DD coil on the XT 70? I noticed you only had the stock and the eliptical ones for sale and from what I've read, the 6 inch HF DD is the best for nuggets. I need to buy a detector, and fairly convinced the XT 70 is the one I need, but still strongly considering the MXT, even though I may never run into ground like yours. Just curious if that coil would make a lot of difference. Maybe we're asking too much of one detector. For what it's worth, I always google your name or Monte's when I need the best opinion. Thanks for being there. James

do u use tracking in coin mode? i know a lot of people do in gold mode but what about looking for coins is there any advantage? thanks

Hey there James. Just popped into town for a day and then back out into the mountains. I picked up an HF 6" DD a week ago and have been playing around with it. Haven't used the prospecting mode since I've been detecting Forest Service campgrounds and they are 'trash city'. Did check out how it responds to my tiny subgrain test nugget (?) and it does display a bit better sensitivity.. but not a huge amount. I was able to pick it up at something like 1 cm away. It does a lot better in the very trashy areas and can pick up a coin at rather impressive distances. Personally, I tend to think that the setup to beat would be the XT70 with HF 6" DD and the HF 10" round DD. While the Elliptical DD is a decent compromise coil, it's not waterproof AFAIK and probably doesn't have the depth of the HF DD 10" round coil. Also, while the elliptical can be sealed, it's still a pain in the butt to use it in the water 'cause it floats.
When it comes down to brass tacks, I'd say that the XT70 would be the way to go unless you plan to hit some really nasty ground whilst prospecting. Even then, a person could go really slow and it would do fine. I like the MXT (for prospecting) 'cause I can swing it fast and not worry about ground handling.. but that's basically it. ..Willy.

Thanks for the excellent answer to my question, Willy. A post somewhere by an Australian named, BT I believe, confirms your opinion of the MXT in bad ground. Good luck, and let us know how those 2 coils work out. James
