Tracking Your Finds

How do you keep track of your finds? Log book, spreadsheet, software program, memory? Looking for some ideas.

I use a big desk top calender, keep track of batteries(time/hrs),clad,jewelry finds,etc....but, you will remember where and when you found the good ones.HH bob.oz

I use XL spreadsheet, and track hunt date, location, coins, detector & coil, hours of hunt, and use comments in some cells for special finds. Also have it keep count of total coins for the day, for ever and type of coin.
I make line item entries of detector trade, buy, or sale deals, just so I kind of know when a change came about. My hope here was to be able to tell if my finds increased or decreased.
In the same file I have a second page setup just to list locations I would like to hunt someday.

It could use a little more work, but to lazy to spend the time on it.

When I started in the 70's I was using a log book and when I started the spreadsheet I just lumped the totals from the log book and started from there.

No count kept.............. ever so often clean all clad and turn it in. Silver is seperated and kept in containers.

I never felt the need to keep a count on finds............ It's a Hobby for me. To much book keeping and it becomes work.... LOL

Some people like to keep stats and find it enjoyable, some don't. I'm in the don't category. This hobby has a big enough umbrella for all but those that are destroying it.

I have an old cash book with lines in it that I bought in 1976 and that is also the date of my first entry. It is divided with each denomination and one for tokens and misc. cool stuff. I enter the year, mint mark, condition and where and when I found it. I don't enter or keep track of clad.
Good luck Gary

I made a monthly spreadsheet to keep track of my finds. I enter where I detected and the number of each denomination coin. The spreadsheet calculates dollar values and number of coins of each denomination, overall totals, etc. I also put in a couple of lines for entering past months and past years total to keep overall running totals. If I find jewelry or a special coin there is a smal space to make a brief note of it. I set it up so it prints out on one sheet. So, at the end of the month I print it and put it in the file for future reference.

It can be pretty handy to look back to see where most of my finds are coming from as time passes. Sometimes looking back gives me ideas for new places to detect. Once it is set up, it is quick and easy to enter the info. Just have to be careful when carrying over the last month and last year totals.

I use my smart phones GPS, downloaded the App "Arrowhead Collector". When I find something special I mark the location in the display catalogue, and this application will find the exact place within a few feet of the find. It

I am currently using Minelab's new XChange2 application. It was designed for use with the new CTX3030, but can be used to document your finds, along with Lat and Long information, and pictures of the find. You can acquire the Lat and Long information, from a handheld GPS during your recovery, or once in the XChange2 app, if you created a WP on the GoogleMap, it will show the Lat and Long of the location you select as "your Find location".You can go to Minelab's website http://www.minelab.com/aus/apps, to download the application. If you aren't a CTX owner, once you have downloaded the XChange2 application, you will have to manually load the find information, pictures, etc.. It will plot on the GoogleMap that will come up with the XChange2 app. I have edited Way Points (WP001 for example) to plot finds not actually found with my CTX. You can then bring up all of the finds that have been "created" and they plot on the GoogleMap provided. It will allow you to determin where, and if there is a location in your hunt site, that may have a larger number of good targets. Or to refresh your memory of find locations, at a later time. If you aren't a CTX user, there will be some functions of the app that you won't be able to use, as the Finds (FP00?) are created in the CTX while in the field, actually making the finds. The FP information cannot be created manually, without initial CTX info provided. But like I mentioned above, you can edit the WP to reflect a find, with the information of your edit.............Just another good tool for documentation, if one so desires..........HH
