Tough to focus these yard critters

Finally captured one of these wood grain moths in the screen room out back. No, there is no hole in screen, but I bet this guy could make one if he wanted.
Even though the cd-200 has manual focus PLUS aperture priority PLUS macro features I always find it difficult to capture a really in focus pic when subject is up against a screen like the moth is or a lizard sitting on a fence or whatnot.
I used f-11, shutter on auto, tripod, self-timer and used both manual and auto focus. It took some 10 shots before one was kinda acceptable.
I was about to get a ruler and measure focal distance but the rain started. Now I need to get the manual out to see where the focal point is on the cam body.
Anyone have any tips or share these focus situations too????
Tony

What size is that moth? It looks huge.
Brian.
P.S. Nice shot.
