Tough decision-need opinions

Over the last 10 years I have spent many thousands of dollars on about every detector out there. Many times buying a detector, selling it, then a few months later buying the same thing again. One thing that I have learned is "to be good with a detector you must use that detector a lot, whether it is a top of the line or a beep and dig". You can only swing one detector at a time so I feel I never really get good trying to use a different one each trip. Each one finding no more than the other. I just sold my "used only once Etrac" and now have one more I need to let go. There the problem lies--- I want to keep my Tejon for hunting the woods and looking for old home sites. I also have an MXT Pro and an Xterra 705. I want to keep one of these but I just can't make up my mind. Both are great detectors when it comes to cherry picking. Each one has great pros and few cons. What do you folks think? Which one should I sell? Thanks

OK............ Xterra705.You want the Tesoro, The MXT can do it all for general detecting..Lots of nice features

You want to know what we think?----I think you already just sold the one you should have kept!----I'm sure you had your reasons for selling your Etrac though.----Of the three left, I think I would go with the very versatile MXT-------BTW, I know what you mean about spending money on detectors---I've spent thousands of dollars on them over the last 10 years also, it gets old, doesn't it!--------------Del

Hi MXTerer, Don't sell either one yet, least wise on someone else's advice. You didn't spend 10 years and all that $ ,gaining all that experience to depend on someone else's unqualified advice to make that choice for you. Hang on a bit longer and give some of that experience time kick in and you will figure it out and be satisfied you made the right choice on your own. That should eliminate some of the possible second guessing should there happen to be any later on. HH, Charlie

Well Charlie---It wasn't exactly unqualified advice as I have owned/used all the detectors that the gentleman mentioned (and I'm sure Elton has to)-----I (we) know what you mean though (I think). :)----We're all in this hobby together & just try to help each other the best we can.---------BTW, I think that was an excellent point you made--the final decision is absolutely up to the individual.------------Del

Hi Del, Sorry, but no offence should be taken by anyone concerning my use of "unqualified".I simply meant that there would be no one else more qualified to make such judjements for "Himself,"than HIMSELF.. In doing so, he will be putting in disregard all the experience he has gained in the last 10 years, or that gained in the future.. Consideration of opinions is one thing, but to make a decision intirely upon someone else's experience is not the way to base one's decision on. That seemed to me the way he was headed.. If I am wrong , please correct me. HH,Charllie

Hey Charlie----Cetainly no offense taken!------I agree with you in that the final decision is in the user himself as there are so many things to be taken into consideration in the purchase of a metal detector (or in this case, which one to keep & which one to sell).------Not the least of: what detector fits an individual & his/her hunt style the best.----If a person actually just doesn't "like" a detector, they simply aren't going to do as well with it--I think that is a fact that is overlooked a lot.-----Only the individual themself can make that decision (after taking everything else into consideration).-----------Del

Which one have you hunted the most with and really know regardless of brand, go with your gut instinct and do look back or second guess yourself, just my thought HHH.

Based on what I liked, and used....Your right though..he should make his own mind up....... Anything we would suggest will only be individual opinion...

Hi Elton, That was really all my reply was about, and I may could have worded it to be understood a little better.I too know how it is having a big herd of detectors .It is easy to get attached to them and awful hard to let them go. Lol, I need to take some of my own advice and cut some of mine loose. ,,,,, Errr aaah , I'll think on it some, lol, "some more" Yeah Right! HH Y'all,, Charlie

it just might not happen Hahahahahahahahah.. I dump some, and keep others in a never ending cycle... LOL
And.there is always room for one more..

AMEN & AMEN!!!!!!!!

Yep Fellers, that's me too!Still have the first, a BFO I got back in 69, that still works. Won't say how many's on my wall, right now,in and out of the closet, but there are 10+ 2or 3 more. Only sold one back in the early 90's. Gave a practically new one to a digging buddy. Mercy!! He smokes all our butts with it now almost everytime our bunch digs together. It was a "deepie" but I just never could adjust to it. I 'm serious now only with Tesoro, and have been trying to latch onto the oldie /goodie ones(Amigo II,,Inca ,GS II.,Sidewindwer (2), Shadow X2, & X5 (gave X5 and an early Whites to my son),Compadre, Tejon. Also Hays MK II, Compass 100khz Coin Hustler (2,) 6"&8"coil), and a Wilson CoinSelect (Whites straight Shaft mod.) I do try and keep them all ready to fire up and ready for a dig now and then but certainly don't need them all. It would be tuff to cull them out but of course it all depends on what mood happens to hit next, My tired old bod has quelched my fever for the high $ stuff that comes at us now and then,I had my share of those "moments" Now I just "be cool" and go and dig my yard some when I get the diggin fever. Though I did drive 88 miles (1 way) and spend probably 7hrs hunting in the Dozier tracks last Fri. , so I still got my legs under me when I need them.New ground for sure and didn't find Squat, Winter will soon be here and the woods will be more inviting. Won't be needing any new machines though,,, well maybe,,, not, hummn, HH, Charlie

You are in trouble if you're asking opinions from this bunch, I say "love the one you're with".

Here is a way for you to make a decision that comes straight from your gut...
Take a quarter....say the mxt will be heads...the xterra will be tails. You are going to flip the coin and whatever side of the coin lands face up, that is the detector you will be getting rid of.
When you flip that coin in the air, before it lands in your hand you will have said to yourself, "Man, I really hope it's not the ____..
It will pull your real selection out of you every time..

If I may offer my humble opinion. I think sometimes, we, as detectorists, become frustrated at not finding what we think we should. In 25 yr's I have had 3 detectors. My change from my last unit was due to its limitations for the type of hunting I do. It was not the machines fault. Bluntly speaking, if your going through that many machines in 10 years, I doubt if its all due to poor performance of a unit. It's usually detecting location/skills that determine if we keep a machine, not performance issues. Just food for thought, not a criticism. My best finds last year were made with my 20 yr old White's Silver Eagle. Why.....I was in the right locations. My coolest find lately was with the Tek T2, due to its incredible ability to seperate junk next to coins. However, it was knowing how to use the T2 that got me the find. Learn your machines, do good research and save your money. There is no perfect unit, or else we would all own the same model:)

I say sell them all and get a V3i. It will do everything the other 3 will, only better. But then you really should get a VLF water machine, a PI water machine, a nugget shooter like the GMT, a PI nugget detector like a Minelab 5000, and a light weight detector for doing the competition hunts. JMHO.
