Totally disappointed in the F70

Heard a lot of good things about the F70 so I took the plunge and got one. I do not believe I have ever purchased a detector that has been this bad. I have a test garden with coins and typical trash you may find at a local park or school. I buried them all at 6 inches. I also buried a silver quarter at 10 inches. The CZ3D I have will ID all the targets correctly. The F70's id numbers jump around so bad on every target it is unbelievable. I dug up one target, a zinc penny and the reburied it at 4 inches. The numbers jumped around from low to high even at only 4 inches. It will not even see the quarter no matter how high the sens. I have tried many different settings and combination of settings to no avail. I have reset the unit many times. It will GB at 62 which I do not believe is that bad. I took it outside today just to play around with it a little more before I sold or traded it and the display went crazy and eventually faded to nothing. I do not believe it is electrical interfernece because I live out in the middle of nowhere and I am the only house around for a quarter of a mile. I have replaced the batteries, reset it numerous times. It will work for a little while after it sits but goes right back to the messed up screen. I am hoping fisher will make it right on this one. I have to believe I got a dud, surely no company would put out junk like this. you can see in the picture how the screen has faded and it has notched out certain items all by itself. Sorry but just had to vent.....

It sounds (and looks) like it has something definitely wrong with it...especially if you changed out the batteries. Mine does an outstanding job...I have no doubt you'll love it when the problem is worked out.

I think you said it right when you stated you have a cz-3d.

And your answer to the F-70 is get another detector. Or you tell them to get a Minelab at another post on this Fisher forum.

My F-70 works great!! I am not going to buy a X-Terra 70.

Just my observation on the pictures of the screen you posted, look at your battery meter, only has 1 bar. Make sure the new batteries you put in are seated correctly with the contacts and that the battery cover is snapped into place. Use quality alkalines such as energizer or duracells, no dollar store batteries.

I noticed that too with the battery meter. I do not think they were low. I think that was part of the detector messing up. I did try some new batteries. Same symptoms. I will try another set to see if the problem continues. Thanks for the suggestion.

yes!..try another set.and make sure you have a good contact on all cells!

I just tried another set that I know is good. I made sure it had good contact on the batteries. It showed a full charge until is started acting up again then the display drops to where it is in the picture. Whats weird is it seems to operate normally for a few minutes then the display starts distorting the numbers and doing weird things. I will just get ahold of Fisher. Thanks for the ideas.....

John,he doesn't have to get another detector,he has one of the best detectors on the market cz-3d.with no call backs,no problems and one of the deepest. Also the xt70 is another great detector,no call backs,no problems many different khz coils,I have bought f70 and one f75 used and they were worse than my coinstrike in every kind of way.If that dog doesn't hunt its time to get rid of him.Yes ,you have read my post right and you may read many more of the same.Fell free to read them as often as you wish.I hunt side by side of several f75s in club hunts and they couldn't hold a candle to the 3d.And as far as locking on targets the xt70 beats both hands down.I don't try to hype up a detector that has many problems to save a company. The company doesn't give thes detectors away.Hell if i purchased a new car and it gave me as much trouble as these new fishers do they would have that car back in a heartbeat. Why is a detector any different.Just look around any sites, ebay etc they are forsale everywhere cheap and getting cheaper,Have you asked yourself why, capital J

One more thing to check is the coil cable where it screws into the control box housing, unsrew it, look for damaged pins on the connector and the recieving part of the connector, put back in gently and screw it just barely finger tight. Won't hurt to try.

Lest we forget, weak battery springs, turning off and on for no reason, mines back in Las vegas right now with audio problems. The second times it's been back. So none are immune to glitches now and then. HH---Wade

Sorry to hear about your problems with your F-70. Fisher will fix whatever the problem is. A properly working F-70 is an awesome thing to behold !

Have your tired a re-set? If you haven't, hold the Menu and ground grab button down together while turning the F-70 on. You will see on the screen a fore ward and rearward F. Then release the buttons.

I also use some high quality Panasonic rechargeable batteries that are 2650 MHA rated. They last a long long time before needing recharging. So far I have over 55 hours on the first charge on these and it still reads as full. I have two sets and got them at Best Buy for 4/$10. They are still on sale as of yesterday 10/5/08.

By the way, I do not work for Fisher or anyone else for that matter! Work gets in the way of detecting.

I had the X-30, X-50 and the X-70.
I never had any problems with the X-30 or the X-70, but the X-50 when I got it the word Sens was missing and it would turn on by its self.
I sent it to Minelab and they replaced the main board and the front half, the only thing that they did not replace was the back half with the Ser. number.
I used it for 2 hours and thought it was ok.
I traded it to a man in PA.
He said there was something wrong with the ground balance, so it was send back to Minelab again, and again they replaced the main board.
I got ride of the X-70 and the X-30 also.
The numbers jumped around on the X-50 and the X-70 more than the X-30.
My X-50 would turn its self on in the middle of the nite.

Now, just a few months ago, a friend bought a new X-70, he never got to hunt with it, it would power up then go off, we messed with the springs, no good, so it went to Minelab for repair.
The note that cam back with the X-70 said, replaced the main board with new board.
Minelab has problems, no one wants to admit it.

The F-70 has a 5 year warranty.
The X-Terra has a 2+2 warranty.

For what both charge, it should be 10 years.

Wow,

Ok, now we have two different F-70's from two entirely different parts of the country doing the EXACT same thing. I was going to post some pictures of what my F-70 was doing but it appears that I do not have to now. If I took pictures of my own F-70 they would be identical to yours. Now we are on to something. Just curious about the serial number of your machine. I would bet that the serial numbers are close. If you don't want to post your serial number maybe we could talk privately. Having two new F-70's having the exact same problem is interesting.

Leo

Sorry but I do not know what the serial number is. I sold the F70. I told them about the problems but they still wanted it so I sold it to them.

I have found over $50 and still on my first set of batteries with the F70

Yeah. I have found over $250 in change in the last month with my F-70 and several silver and gold rings. I use Panasonic 2675 MHA rechargeable batteries and am still on the first charge on them. It's been a long time and still indicates batteries as full. I did a voltage reading on each battery and they still read at 1.2 volts. I still cannot figure out how Fisher machines can get so many hours out of batteries. The F-70 swings so fast that I may end up selling my White's Spectrum with the Bigfoot coil. I am getting more coins with the F-70 than the Spectrum because the F-70 is so much deeper than the Bigfoot coil can go.

Found just a few silver coins and a few wheaties.......it just the places I hunt are newer.

Will be hunting some older sites soon and will report on the finds.

I must say that I love my F-70...and I don't work for Fisher.

You purchased this detector from Bill_S . He sold you a flunky unit. The same one you answered this post about.
