i'm getting a machine.never having had but always wanted one.so,this fisher outfit looks like a good company.the f70 looks good.the money angle is not a problem and after i saw the video about the f70 with all it's operating features,i'm now wondering if it's too complicated for a complete novice like me.whats your thoughts?
for some one thats never used one before i personaly would'nt recomend it and that if for some reason you don't like it you won't be out a lot of money either, but i'm not saying it's not possible either but if go this route you can't get discouraged , you will have to put a lot time and patience into it what i would do is make test bed and get afilliated with the ground balance feature on that which is vital on some grounds with out it you will struggle to find stuff and try to learn the sensitivity and the limits you usually can't run full sens with out the machine going unstable the numbers will go all over the place and not lock on very well, just some of the basics here on that machine!
Like AMC says it's a bit of a busy interface to start off with, and you don't want to sabotage yourself by having a detector that's complicated enough to keep you from getting to know the hobby. The Garrett ACE250 is a favorite starting machine that has many of the basic features of a TDI/VDI(tone ID, Visual ID) type of detector. It is very popular, has lots of forum support, cheap, well made, readily available, and also easily re-sold with little financial loss when you decide to upgrade. So there's very little financial risk, you get to try the hobby out, it will allow you to familiarize yourself with the basic controls and is a decent performer. When/if you decide to upgrade you will have a reference point as to which controls/features are important to you, what the ACE250 is lacking that you want, and will have field experience. Disclaimer: I don't own stock in Garrett, I'm not the Garrett National Sales Manager blah, blah, blah...I've never even owned a Garrett. But if you go to the Garrett forum you will see a lot of happy campers with the ACE250.
From what I have read in the forums the Fisher F2 outperforms the Ace 250. Since this is a Fisher forum, I am surprised the F2 was not mentioned. The F2 would be my recommendation.
thanks for all the good advice fellas.i had a gut feeling about the f70 after i saw the video.i'd be way off in ability and not do justice to the f70s features.i will start a search of the players you all reccomended, looking closely for user friendly controls and features.regards to all.
yappo, my advice would be to get a simple turn on and go machine without target id and other features that may only confuse you since you are just getting into the hobby. look at a used fisher 1225 or something along those lines. tesoro makes a sweet little machine called the silver umax that you can buy new for 240.00 and it is just a great detector that will do a great job on coins and jewelry. you can also buy a smaller coil for hunting in high trash areas or a larger coil for more coverage in larger areas or fields. target id on most detectors is not that accurate in identifying targets and i think you tend to rely on what the meter is telling you and pass up alot of good targets. discrimination is very important when hunting a site.... use as little as possible or you will be passing up gold rings and other good targets. you came to the right place to get advice... the guys here are almost all very experienced hunters and can give you all the help you need to get you up to speed with your new detector. looking forward to seeing your posts about all the old coins you are finding. good luck and happy hunting............roger
For great performance and ease of use in the price range of the F70 go over to the Teknetics forum and check out what people have to say about the Omega.8000. If you want top performance in an easy to use package the Omega just might be what you are looking for.
I agree totally on the Garrett ace 250. My son just got the ace 250. It is his first detector. HE LOVES IT ! Easy to learn, turn it on and go. I think the ace 250 is a coin magnet. It is also the #1 seller out there. Read the reviews, its like everyone that uses it, falls in love with it as well.
You will be very pleased starting out with the 250, I'm sure of that!
I am only stating the FACTS about the garrett ace 250, I have no association with Garrett.
well boy's, i went and got the ace 250.it fits perfectly with my lack of experiance.the dvd and instructions that came with it were easly understood by me and since its arrival i've put 6hrs on it.still a lot of snow here in ma.but i headed to the shore and found a quiet beach area to practice.after about 30sec.i had my first hit,a beer bottle cap, which is now on display at home.the great sense of anticipation you get when hunting i find adds much to the overall fun of it all.now,if i can only find some viking treasure.......
