Tot lot report for the AT

I went out to a tot lot last night for about an hour for some easier digging and varied targets with the intention of getting video. Well, I have more work to do on a night setup for the video but here are some notes.

I ran in STD mode, coins, with sensitivity set at 4. Unfortunately this lot has been hit before I got there so targets were not very diverse! What I found was mostly aluminum in the form of wire, which rang in the 45 range, a few pennies which fell at 72/73, and one nickel which came in at 53. My impression was that it ran like a more powerful and faster responding ACE-which is not a bad thing. The DD coil isn't as easy to pinpoint with on the smaller, trashy stuff as others I've used, but you can always switch into pinpoint mode and that works just fine. The DD drag method does still apply but will take a little more practice. In PRO mode, the aluminum targets sound very scratchy, and since the headphones were on top of my head by the camera, I had trouble trying to sort out the information given in that mode! I plan to do more hunts without trying to video just so I can get a little more used to the detector without all the other distractions! Response time is good, but it's certainly not a speed demon for tot lots. Now admittedly, those areas are their own world of detecting compared to trashy homesites and the rest, but I like to start there because it gives me a pretty decent idea of the characteristics of various units. Target depths were on the deep side of typical for an ACE-I usually run the ACE one notch below max-so just for grins, I bumped sens up (from 4) and began to encounter the weed barrier on some targets. I don't cut that barrier because I've installed too many of them and don't feel right about tearing through it. I had one signal that was a very repeatable 80 though and I sure wish I could've seen what it was! One thing I also noticed was that the AT and ACE share a common trait of identifying some targets as being deeper than they actually are. This usually seems to be more of a phenomenon in the mulch, but I'll get back to the dirt soon and take notes at that time.

Time is my enemy lately and I don't expect that to get much better! However, I'll get out Friday and have more to report and hopefully some more videos!

Plyedriver ... before you go out and hunt a tot lot again ... get out some of your small gold rings, charms, and tie tacs.

Set up the detector just like you had it ... Standard Mode ... Coin Program.

Now air test some of the small gold objects.

Switch the Program to ZERO and air test those same objects again.

Any difference?

Big difference with my AT PRO.

I'll check and get back to you...

OK...seems that I actually had better 'depth' in coin mode than zero? That's kinda weird. I also tried to think in terms of the detectors I had that found the trinkets I just used.. I used all small stuff like you mentioned except some small silver rings.

Now in PRO mode the results were opposite..

Thanks Pyledriver, I think there is something wrong with my new detector.

I have a thin gold ring that in Standard Mode ... Coin program ... it wont hardly detect it.
I did enable the two notched out blocks in that program.

Switching to the Zero program it hits it hard.
I suspected that was not right.

The Ring ...

Hmmm..that really doesn't seem right. Now, to be fair, since I now know exactly what you're after-let me dig out some thin rings from the wife's stash!! I'll run the same test with the coin mode and those blocks notched out, then add them back in and re-test. Stay online-I'll be back in a few minutes..

Ok-you have a problem.. I tried both std and pro, coins and zero and I still get signals!

The COIN program notches out three segments.
The first segment is #42.
Guess where this ring hits the VDI scale ... 42!
I tried a small gold cross and it has the same VDI number.
That is what worried me ... two gold objects not being detected.
Now I know why.

I restored the three notched out segments and it detects this 10K ring and the gold cross just fine.
The ZERO program dont have any segments notched out and that is why I thought I had a problem.

Amazing how understand what your detector is set for can solve some problems.

Thanks for taking us along on the learning curve Willee and PD. Excellent stuff to know! And am very glad you got beyond this!

Best Regards,
Steve

I agree, problems you can solve yourself end up being the best ways to learn! I just need to squeeze in more hunts so I can encounter a few problems of my own to work out..LOL!

I notice mine on std zero mode all segments on mine is on too.Have you found any problems with this?

No that is the way the ZERO program should be.
In PRO Mode that is almost like all metal but you still have the tones and the VID to help ID.

It is the COIN program that notches out three segments and unless you are aware of that you might be surprised.

I did an air test on about a dozen pieces of gold the night I got mine and they were all over the VDI scale from 39 all the way to 72:yikes:, so my advice is to dig it all, I think thats the only to get gold with this sucker:thumbup:.
If you want coins, put her in coin mode and leave the gold rings for me:)

Run the machine wide open and accept EVERYTHING until you see the range that you get for the targets you are digging ......Play with discrimination later when you know more about the machine !!.....DIG IT ALL for now and get use to the way the AT Pro handles ..... Jim

I agree...now that's not what I DID the other night-LOL! But I agree. This detector is just familiar enough with some of it's ACE-like features and tones that it's going to throw some folks for a loop if they try to treat it the same way! For myself, I think I have a lot of learning to do. Now if I could just get more time to get out there... Nasty cold front moving through today bringing t-storms and heavy rain later! Dangit. Yeah, I know, the unit can handle that, but I don't like digging in black gumbo mud! :surrender:

You can always add those segments in coin mode so you don"t miss out right ?
