I went out to a tot lot last night for about an hour for some easier digging and varied targets with the intention of getting video. Well, I have more work to do on a night setup for the video but here are some notes.
I ran in STD mode, coins, with sensitivity set at 4. Unfortunately this lot has been hit before I got there so targets were not very diverse! What I found was mostly aluminum in the form of wire, which rang in the 45 range, a few pennies which fell at 72/73, and one nickel which came in at 53. My impression was that it ran like a more powerful and faster responding ACE-which is not a bad thing. The DD coil isn't as easy to pinpoint with on the smaller, trashy stuff as others I've used, but you can always switch into pinpoint mode and that works just fine. The DD drag method does still apply but will take a little more practice. In PRO mode, the aluminum targets sound very scratchy, and since the headphones were on top of my head by the camera, I had trouble trying to sort out the information given in that mode! I plan to do more hunts without trying to video just so I can get a little more used to the detector without all the other distractions! Response time is good, but it's certainly not a speed demon for tot lots. Now admittedly, those areas are their own world of detecting compared to trashy homesites and the rest, but I like to start there because it gives me a pretty decent idea of the characteristics of various units. Target depths were on the deep side of typical for an ACE-I usually run the ACE one notch below max-so just for grins, I bumped sens up (from 4) and began to encounter the weed barrier on some targets. I don't cut that barrier because I've installed too many of them and don't feel right about tearing through it. I had one signal that was a very repeatable 80 though and I sure wish I could've seen what it was! One thing I also noticed was that the AT and ACE share a common trait of identifying some targets as being deeper than they actually are. This usually seems to be more of a phenomenon in the mulch, but I'll get back to the dirt soon and take notes at that time.
Time is my enemy lately and I don't expect that to get much better! However, I'll get out Friday and have more to report and hopefully some more videos!
