Torn between E-Trac and Latest Explorer

Hello Everyone,

I plan on buying a new detector soon.I never used a Multi Freq Machine before and not sure which to get.

I have been using the XT-70 for almost a year now and have had great success, but now I want the best, to go after the old silver.

Living in a very rural setting, has its' bennys with many old homesteads, schools and parks. So I may try my hand at the fields and old foundations also.

There aren't many detectorists around. The idea of a tech filled machine will be a challenge I look forward to,and already ordered
two of Andy's books (Mastering/Explorer & Explorer/Etrac new one). I have the fever real bad lol.

Don't get me wrong, the XT-70 is a fine machine, which has not disappointed me.I just want to add a Multi Freq model to my arsenal.

I'm in Phoenix visiting grandkids and ran into a guy using a Etrac and I was quite impressed with his machine. One Beautiful Looking Piece of Kit.

Does the Etrac have extra abilities that would justify the extra money.Detecting is my favorite pastime, and I go out everyday, for the most part it keeps me out of trouble.

As my wife says "An idle mind is the devils workshop". So the fresh air, exercize, research and less time in local VFW, its all good for this old warhorse.

Look forward to any info.

Thanks in advance

Ron

I've owned the SE and now own the Etrac. I would get the Etrac if that's the one that impressed me but the SE is a great machine.

Thanks for the reply John,

I used the search feature here and Wow.

Guess I'm not the first to ask this question, I know now to first check with archives,

I appreciate your response,Yes it seems I'm leaning towards ET.

I'm hoping Andy's books will help.

I'm in the same boat as you are - here is what I'm doing: Bought a new eTrac at the first of the month on my credit card, I'm going to use it for 3 weeks & take real good care of it, then if I'm not happy with it I will sell it on ebay or on a MD forum for 1100.00 - I paid 1300.00 for it with a 3 year warranty, Like New - - so the very worst case is IF AM NOT happy with it just spent 200.00 bucks on a 3 week rental & came up with my own conclusions about the eTrac - good by me. On the Plus side if I am happy with the eTrac then I've got a great machine!

I have used Garrett for about 7 or 8 years and simple enjoy the GTI 2500, However I met an uncle of a good friend of mine while on vacation last year and was able to metal detect with him for a week. He swears by Minelab and has a collection of rings and other jewelry that is astonishing. I decided I wanted to add another machine and thought about purchasing the Infinium LS but through alot reading and talking to some dealers with a little help for my friends uncle I purchased the E-Trac. After reading some of Andy's book last night I found where himself and Bill Paxton were finding coins with the E-Trac in areas they thought they had already hunted out with the Explorers. Andy's book will make you buy an E-Trac and the book is awesome.
I have only had mine 2 days and have not had the chance to hit the field to see what lurks below but I think I made the right decision.

Ron,

I've had my E-Trac since Christmas. Been MD'ing for over 30 years with Fishers and Garretts, however this E-Trac will out-perform any other detector. I have taken it back to areas that have been hunted out by myself as well as other MD'ers, and the deep coins just keep coming. Just this afternoon I dug an 1835 Large Cent in a yard that was picked clean. After witnessing the E-Trac's capabilities, there is no way I could go back to another detector.

Buy the E-Trac. You will be glad you did.

I owned an X Terra 70 as well as an Explorer II for years. I have been using the Etrac since last summer. It is very similar to the X 70 with tones and numbers as compared to the Explorer so using an Etrac would be a pretty easy for you to get the hang of. It's recovery speed and stability constantly amazes me, best machine I have owned!

Steve,
Pretty good idea.
I'll be waiting for your evaluation.

bcoop,

I too have used Garrett since 1990's (CXIII),still have it.
They make fine machines,I also was considering a Infinium.
I have no first hand knowledge of the Explorer, only from what I've read and I've read extensively.
That was going to be my next unit until the ETrac came out and messed my plans up.
The XT-70 is a pretty amazing machine, so I can imagine what the capabilities of the ET or Explorer are.
Can't wait for Andy's books to get here.

Mike,

There are many places I have in mind to redo.
There is a park(in PA) that was once an amusement park right after the Civil War,it is now just a city park and I have had good luck there.
There are so many potential sites,I would love to find a Large Cent someday. There are a number of One Room Schoolhouses, that I have access to.
The Ladies at the historical society allow me access to a few old spots, one is a museum,I always leave my area better than I found it.
