Tools of the trade

Just wondering, how does everyone carry thier tools around while detecting. (for example, web belt and pouch. knife, pinpointer and rag)

I went to the biggest hardware store I could find and found on sale something similar to this. I got mine for 10 Dollars US. lightweight, canvas, no metal Hooks for tools just leather straps. Works really good and keeps my pants from falling down!

hi magicman, i have a simple sling across the shoulder canvas pouch. this time of year i mostly relic hunt woods and fields, so i carry my short spade in left hand. i prefer to move fast and light. i also have a dull butcher knife and a short modified cleaver that fits well in my back pockets for yards. i'm very habit bound in the way i hunt, and don't like to fumble endlessly with gadgets i don't need. they break my concentration and take time, and ultimately, finds away from the hunt. hh,

I use a large fanny pak that is large enough for my tools, extra batteries, and finds. Keep everything I normally use in it so one grab and I'm good to go.

This is the set-up I have been using for the last 10 years.
ALICE pack straps attached to a HD work belt
Carpenters pouch modified to hold tools
Digger is assembled from two seperate garden trowels
Knife is a ground down bayonet
Probe is a modified screwdriver with a dowl attached to make a "T".
White's Bullseye is modified with an 8" tip
Snippers are for small roots
Towl for dirt from hole
Flags for marking a line of sight
Other pouch is for trash

i use a carpentors single side belt, then on the opposite side i attach a clip on leather sheath for my digger then another for a pair of hand pruners for clipping off tough roots

Waterbug, like the idea of the flags for line of sight.

I have the web gear set-up (retired Army) but I decided on something else with a lot less metal.

hello all, i occasionally use 2" round pieces of reflective tape stuck to heavy cloth to mark where i've been. they're flat and a stack of them fits well in my back pockets. they work really good, you should try it sometime. i will drop one every now and then on the right side of my swing. just don't forget to pick them up at the end of the day! hh,

Get a roll of orange survey tape they use to tie to survey stakes.

You can tie a small piece high enough to see it. If there is no

obstruction you can just kind of stick it in the ground. If it's high

grass, you can clump strands of grass and tie it to the grass.

That is something that works in any situation.

You can always see it and it's easy to carry. No metal. It's cheep.

I have been searching for survey corners for so long, I rarely need

anything to keep track in almost all situations. I do have some

difficulty in woods that are flat and constant trees. I will lose

my reference while looking down and start to make a constant right

deflection resulting in a circular line.

I tie survey flaggen to my metal detector and shovel so I can find them.

HH,
HH,

Sometimes the land is not flat.It can be very rolling. For this reason I have the flag wires clipped to 6" and 8".These I can see very well and follow the lay of the land for what ever distance needed. They are easy to place and pick-up to move over to the next line as I go along.Hard to forget one of these sticking up and the wire does not interfere with detecting. There are times when I don't want anyone to notice I am patterning an area,so I use twigs, etc to mark a line.

old tool belt my husband dosent use anymore. not one of those bulky ones. its a fairly simple one. but mostly i just wear pants with large side pockets. kinda like army pants but looser one side for screwdrivers and shovel the other for finds. the only trouble with that is my pockets fill with dirt. :nopity:

I just put my pinpointer in one back pocket, and my digging tool in my other back pocket. detector in my right hand, and my D-handle shovel in the left hand. My finds and garbage in my pouch.

Well I have a web belt, from Lowes and a tape measure holder for my Automax pin pointer. The other item I have on the belt is the Kelly co mesh bag that has 3 compartments, great for shaking out the dirt. Just picked up a magnifying glass. I keep extra stuff in the car, like extra coil, batteries and a digital camera. opps, forgot the gator shovel I keep on the belt and the mini shovel I keep in the car, plus 2 detectors.

i havent got a pin pinpointer yet but my bday coming up next month who knows i may get one. if not i will have to save the change i find when im out. up to 7.50. at this rate i should have one in about a year.
