Took Vaquero to the lake

Decided to try the lake for my third hunt with the Vaquero. Went to a spot where alot of partys take place. Not a swimming area but I heard that alot of swimming takes place there. The lake is low due to drought, so I searched where I thought they might have been swimming. Found a few coins, one small gold ring, fish sinkers and I probably dug 100 pull tabs and trash. I think I read on another post that someone was having trouble with the Vaq. hitting on quarters. I found 3 quarters but I have to admit, they did not respond real well and they were shallow. The lead sinkers sounded off loud and clear though.

How deep will it hit on the Qarter in all metal;?

If you're not hitting quarters with a good hard hit, then your ground balance is set too positive and needs to be adjusted 'spot' on the nose or more to the negative side. The V has a fast auto-tuned all-metal and when doing the GB the coil needs to be pumped up and down rather briskly, pay attention to the threshold as the coil is pumped toward the ground in a downward coil movement. The threshold should stay the same or 'just' go quiet as coil approaches the ground, set this way it will hit the higher conductive coins and get the gold range also.

Gunnar, the quarters hit at 10 to 12 inches in all metal air test. Same results when super tuned.
Randy, thanks for the pointers, I'll give it a try. I'm sure my ground balancing needs some work.

How did that gold ring sound before you dug it up? We're you digging everything above the iron range or thumbing your discrimination knob? I'm curious because I haven't found any gold yet but have found 2 junk rings digging every good repeatable target just above the iron range last couple times out with my Vaquero (one aluminum, one plated gold)

Coinscratch, I was digging everything above iron. By the time I found the ring, I was getting pretty tired of all the trash, so I really wasn't paying attention to what it sounded like. I checked it when I got home though and it faded out at the nickel range.
