Took the X305 noodling in the iron.

It was too nice a day to stay inside, so I put the 6 inch HF DD on the X305 and headed for some nasty iron patches. The kind of iron where there are 5 to 6 iron hits per foot of coil travel.

Since the soil in these pine thickets is mild I was able to GB at 4 to 5 and run sensitivity at full tilt. I had threshold at 2, tones in multi(99), and volume at full. Over a couple hour hunt I dug no iron, but since I was starting to get .22cal cartridges & slugs I notched out +4 & +8. I wasn't looking for gold jewelry on this hunt so I wasn't going to waste time digging .22 stuff.

I dug mostly wheat pennies, a few memorials, a few Roosies, a couple modern quarters, and a 1944 war nickel. Max depth on the pennies was about 6 inches, and many were laying at an angle.

Here's some pixs.

Great goodies! I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the features of the 305! It's pretty much an XT50 at the 30 price! It really has all you need for coins, relics and jewelry hunting.

That's how I see it too Kenny. About the only difference is the notches. I love the idea of a tone for each notch. After play around with the 70 over the last dew days, it's surprises me how much more effective hearing tone differences is to seeing numbers. They have a greater impact.
I reckon that the X-Terra 505 would make a perfect coin machine given it has 18 notches. 12 notches is sometimes a bit broad and 28 notches is sometimes a bit narrow, causing a lot of jumping, but 18 would be just right. Might have to watch out for Goldy Locks and the three bears though.
Mick Evans.

When I had my Xterra 50 I thought it was a great coin and jewelry machine. I then had the opportunity to trade for a new Xterra 70. I thought I was going prospecting and salt beach hunting last year. I never made it. But the 70 is a nice machine. I never really used the prospecting mode for sizing so I could have just kept the 50. All I really wanted was a simple machine with ground balance. Nothing too fancy. So the 305 is looking pretty good. But of course the 705 looks a little better!

For a couple hours in iron that causes machine gun blanking of the threshold, a very respectable showing.

Lots of lead blobs, brassy stuff, and then the dreaded .22 cal virus. Once you find one, they start popping up all over the place. After about a dozen more +4 & +8 hits that I didn't dig they needed to be dispatched via notching.

If you look in the metal detecting dictionary under "iffy target" there's a picture of one of these. I sure did some ciphering before I decided to dig it, because it was surround by iron targets. And I was trying to decide if it was something hiding next to iron. It looks to be a solid brass coat button with a rusty steel shank.

your right i have an xterra 305 and love it.I also have an xterra 70 and believe it or not i like the 305 better. It ids better and is smoother and has great battery life.

Great to hear all the good reviews of the 305. Mine's due to arrive tomorrow! Damn, it's going to be painful waiting for the UPS dude to show. I'm upgrading from a White's Prizm III. Any special knowledge I should gather to help me in my transition? I'll be heading to the Columbia River Gorge this weekend to try it out!

Love my 305 i leave tones at 3 sensitivity as high as possible without chirpen at nothen. I youse mode one wich is coin mode seems to work great in that mode. Volume 1 down from highest. This machine loves quarters yull see. Very simple user friendly machine. High tones dimes and quarters. Mid tones nickels and pull tabs and pennys. Brocken tones usually junk but somtimes pennys or othe goodies. i had a prizm 2 this 305 destroyes it. Good luck
