Took the Vaquero out to the park

The rain stoped so I took the Vaquero out for a spin.
Its going to take a bit of getting used to. I balanced like the
manual said, but finding a spot with no metal wasn't easy.

The first hour I set the threshold where I could hear it in the
back ground. Its about as annoying as listening to the Ace go
ding, ding, and dong during the hunt.

There were no deep targets of any value. What deep targets there
were turned out to be deep crushed cans.

I set the discrimination one mark past pull tabs. I din't find many
of them. I did dig lots of bottle caps though. Dozens in fact. It would
come in as a good target so I dug and it was a bottle cap or a piece
of crushed soda pop can.

Finally I decided to hunt in all silent mode; I've never done that before.
What a difference that makes. I was surprised that the machine only
sounded off on good targets, or usually they were good targets. I still
got alot of bottle caps and a couple of pull tabs.

I noticed that quite frequently the discrimination knob would change on
me. Some how I must have been accidently touching it because several
times when I looked it went from one mark past pull tab all the way to Max.
I was afraid I might have missed some coins while in Max so reset it and went back
over the area again just in case. I still seemed to find coins even in Max.

Pinpointing is going to take some time as well. The Vaqureo is different than the Ace.
I have to X the target in all metal pinpoint mode ,and usually if its a coin its easy to
do but sometimes I'm still off a bit when I go to dig. I used my Garrett Propointer to verify that I had
actually pinpointed correctly . Almost all the targets were coming in at 1 to 2 inches.

Like the Ace you can tell if its a large target and usually its a piece of junk
or crushed soda can. I dug a few just to verify that I was right.

I am surprised at how many quarters showed up. Usually I find tons of pennies but
not this time. Also Dimes were not showing up as frequently as with my Ace.
Maybe there were none to be found today. I did find four of them I think.I did find a lot of junk
not shown in the pictures.

I tried MDing in All Metal but there is just so much junk in the parks; it's not worth it.
I switched back to discrimination silent mode and did ok. This will be a good relic and coin machine.
It will be interesting to see how it does at this old town I have been detecting in with my Ace and MXT.

Question: When the discrimination slips all the way to MAX am I loseing much?

As far as I know max is only supposed to pick up silver. As you learned the Vaq loves Aluminum...the tesoro hot detectors have a really hard time ignoring aluminum...how ever, aluminum should sound slightly different..it has a smoother sound and its usually louder. with practice you will be able to tell the difference.

I'm surprised you're ignoring pulltabs.......it makes sense if you're only after coins.

nice work!

Then push the knob down on the o-ring and then tighten the set screw. The o-ring will add tension to the shaft this way and the knob wont get accidentally bumped.

Once you get adjusted to the pinpointing differences between the detectors, I think you will be happy with how accurate the Tesoro is for sizing and locating targets. For me, I can pinpoint with my Cibola or Tejon more accurately than I can with any of the other detectors I've used. XL Pro is close though.

I plan to take the new machine to this old town I've been detecting, somethine this week.
THEN I'll set discrimination lower and see how it preforms. So far I have not had any
deep targets and what I did have turned out to be junk, but remember I've only used it in two parks
and deeper targets there usually ARE junk.
