Took the M6 out for a spin today; first silver of the year!

Went to a local Middle School today. Found 11 quarters, 8 dimes, several pennies (did not dig and VDI's under 70). One of the dimes was a 43 Merc Dime. It was found about 3" down and came out as shiny as the day it was dropped.

I hunted around the athletic field and several adjacent buildings. There was a lot of trash. I only have the stock coil which made the meter jump quite a bit. I guess I need to get one of the smaller coils.

Glad to hear you are out in the field detecting. Great finds! Just a thought about not digging those lower vdi numbers. Obviously you will be missing gold if you are not digging lower signals. Also I am in the group with my Dfx that digs as much as I can. I think you should consider digging some of those penny/nickel hits(the vdi's 70 and lower) here is why. The coin spills will often come up as a penny. Especially because you are using the stock coil and will not get the great separation you need until you get a small coil. When you ask which one to get and get twenty answers, probably 14 will say 5.3, 6 4x6. I have the 5.3 on the dfx that is all i use in the junk infested areas. Obviously you will lose depth but I have had hits at 6.5 and 7.5 inches with the 5.3. With the coin spills I recently dug 16 coins from one hole! Guess what first signal was,>> a penny. Just a thought...great work on the finds and continued good luck with the m6, a picture of Merc would be nice!Gregg

WTG! It usually takes about 50hours of detecting with any machine, & then some. Good start. On the M6 I like to use no disc and and alot of power, and work my way down from there. If you dig every target, it takes alot of energy and time. It's not a bad strategy. the M6 is a real coin vacuum. You might take a nichel put it on the ground @ your hunting site and use it for a reference. Good luck and have fun.HH

Sounds like you had some fun today. The M6 is excellent hunting the trashy sites with a small coil ,tone ID "ON" ,0 disc and you'll differentiate tone changes quicker than your eyes can interpret a VDI#

You gotta dig targets with lower VDI#'s or you'll be missing a lot of goodies, even masked silver. HH Bill

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Yes, I'm still learning this machine but I like it better and better each time I go out. I think I will get the 5'3' coil.

As far as not digging lower VDI's, I guess I feel like I'll never cover any ground if I do. For instance, at this site, I got strong hits with every sweep of the coil - that's how trashy it was. I just didn't want to be there for several hours and come away with a pocket full of pull tabs, and little else.

I'm also scared of digging that many holes. Even with practicing good recovery methods, I can still tell where I've been a lot of times and I'm afraid of getting run off (or spoiling it for other MD'ers).

Keep the advise coming. Us newbies need it! Thanks again.

Whats really nice about the M6 at trashy sites is using the 7 tone id along with a small coil using as little discrimination as possible,i prefer "0" disc and listen as the probable common trash items pass under the coil and when you hear the slightest difference check it out thoroughly at various sweep angles ,see if there's any difference in depth, you may get a run of differing VDI #'s at the same spot and could indicate a coin spill.

I agree with you about not wanting to dig too many holes as even using proper recovery methods too many holes at one spot can be unsightly. There will always be a lot of iffy signals to return to after the ground heals a bit.

Just my thoughts on the small coil options. The 5.3 Eclipse is one of the best for hunting moderately heavy trash, but the Eclipse 4x6"Shooter,and the 4.5"x7"EXcelerator coils will provide better separation on the side to side sweeps and the 5" Excelerator is just amazing in heavy heavy trash. I'm sure others will have opinions and i babbled enough so Good Luck. HH Bill

GOOD info on fine tuning M-6. I have a lot of hours on the stock coil, beach, inland+trashy sites. I'am looking foward to useing the 4 x 6 shooter that I got with extra's on purchase (almost 1 year,). Never got around to trying,DUH,spent most time on beaches.Any idea's on depth readout Vrs stock coil, thanks RG(CT)

The smaller coils will indicate targets deeper than they are so just figure if it says 6" it's more like 4". HH Bill
