Took the Fisher 1280x out for a swim this morning -

Pete in MI

got off to a slow start but a great finish. All together wound up with 5 quarters, 1 nickel, 1 dime, 2 Hot Wheels cars, a 'crusty' bracelet and the grand finale - a 10K gold ring.

I took along the Garrett GTAx 1250 and when I got ingormed that the swimming area wasn't open I took the Garrett for a walk thru the playground at the county park. With the total from above and what I found with the Garrett it was $2.25 om coins ($2.00 to get into the county park so did more than break even).

My scoop worked fairly well except the 5/8 inch holes for draining kept letting the 10 K gold ring slide through it. Sherry did one of those 'I told ya the holes looked too big"

Takes a little geting used to with the Fisher and the waders and the new scoop but think I did prety good for the first time out with this unit. I asked the life guard if others detect there and she said Yes and I asked about does any of the others use an underwater detector and the answer was Yes as well. Wasn't finding anything at first and thought some had beat me to the goodies.

Just hought I'd let you know the detector seems to be working well.
(And so is the scoop - though I thing a narrow metal lipwork dig into the bottom easier.

are ahead of me now as I dont have any gold with my 1280 yet. That's a good reminder also to us that a place is never cleaned out. Steve in so az

what to do about chains and the like slipping thru the holes. I had a few items I could not 'snare' in the scoop and the water was too deep to see what the objects were. Luckily this gold ring was near the shore and I could see and reach it and picked it up by hand after chasing it around several times.

Will there always be the lost chains? I'm hoping if a chain is lost it will have a good size pendant or ring attached so it will not be lost.

Had a few times I had to chase items that kept moving as I was trying to X the location. One was an elastinc hair band with a small metal tube connecting the ends of the band together. The others were pieces of gum wrappers that moved as I swished across them.

Still not sure of the discrimination so kept it low - at 1 instead of higher.
Need to do some air testing or reading the instruction book again - and again

Since 5/8 is the standard hole is everyone losing chains?

Chains are not easy to slip through one hole. It is like spaghetti!! It is loose and tries to get out several holes, so it usually is mostly in, and only a little out. You can put a small piece of mesh screen in the back bottom, and some put a magnet in to catch small bobby pins etc... small split shot sinkers will give you a fit! They sound great but fall through most any scoop! Also if you can tell the signal is easily moving it is likely to be foil! I hope this helps! :)

I got my scoop (from RTG) with the 1/2" screen on the bottom.

Easier to sift the sand and most small objects won't go through. You can alway use some electrical ties and attach some screen if you want.

I have someone who has a scoop for sale for $50 and I have to pay shipping. Info and pics below:

"Heres three shots of the scoop. It has a nice kick plate back, so you can
push hard with your foot.
You can see the stainless steel front i had made and put on. Should last forever. This is a real solid scoop, a little heavier than the newer ones, but you can use it for years and sell it to another hunter.
Oh, there is also a magnet attached inside the scoop, it collects all the
iron. Very handy."

I just have to wait til payday to get the money together for it.

I do have a small scoop but it is best used in areas like volleyball courts and dry sandy beaches. Wet sand is ok if I can use the water to help do the work of getting the sand out.

Appreciate seeing what you are using Joe.

sure thought we'd be missing alot if chains slipped thru. You are right splitshots and gum wrappers will drive one nuts since neither will stick to a magnet.
