Took the Ace 250 with the 9x12 coil out today.

I wonder if anyone else has doubths about the 9x12 coil.
I tried it today for the first time. The air test were really bad. I threw some coins out on the ground and
barely got 4inchs. I had to rachet up the sensitivity to get anyware near 7 to 8 inches. My 6x9 standard coil does just as well.

Then I took it out to a ball field today. Put a hand warmer inside the battery pack and surveyed a ball field that I have never
MDed before. The ground was like concrete so I couldn't dig anything up but I spent two hours surveying and know there are some good targets to dig when the ground thaws.:clapping: I put it in coin mode and got many seady hits on dimes, lots of quarters and maybe a few nickels. Most of the targets came in a 2 to 4 inches in depth. Nothing more than that.

Can't wait for next week. We're supposed to have some temps in the 50's, but it may take some time for the ground to thaw.

I sent a PM. Maybe it could just be the cold affecting things. If batteries get killed by the cold, there there could be other spin off problems as well. Test it in side at home and see what happens.

Nah. I put a hand warmer in the battery pack and wrap a thick piece of wool around the houseing. Keeps it toasty warm.
Thanks.I'm just goint to return the coil. I don't need it anway. My standard coil is just fine even if id covers less ground.

I'll probably catch flak for this, but I don't really use my large coil for much either. It's best asset seems to be covering more ground in a shorter amount of time rather than increasing depth substantially, but I find it more difficult to pinpoint with the large coil, thereby losing the time I gained covering more ground. The larger coil is heavy enough to make it a pain in the arm after about two hours also. I'm not going to get rid of it, but only because I've already paid for it and there are those few times when it might come in handy. I'm not one for using the sniper coil much, either, but the same thing goes for that one. I think the stock coil is really the best of the three by far and it gets 98% of the use on my Ace 250.

The stock coil on most machines do a pretty good job, I agree with you though I do enjoy using the stock coil and find it easy to pinpoint with. I have saved alot of money this way and decided when I bought the Ace 250 I would use for what it is. I havent been disapointed yet and like many other people have said before, if only the little yellow beast had a manual GB option the Ace would be even more lethal. Garrett are you listening????????
Cheers!

Nah, nobody is going to jump your case. You have your type of hunting in your location and I have mine. What a difference I have seen in MD'ing different states. If it works for you, great!
For me I know the snipper has paid for its self. I did a lot of coil shaking trying to separate targets with the stock coil. The snipper is so much easier to use around trashy homes. I use it about 80% of the time. Sometimes I like to clean up the area by using the stock coil after I went over the area with the snipper.

I get a solid 2-3 inches more on my 9x12 vs the stock coil.
But... in my case I found if you don't run the sensitivity up
pretty high, you won't see it's full potential.
So as far as that part, what you are seeing seems normal to me.
If you want max performance from the big coil, you need to
run it pretty hot.
The drawback to this is the larger coil is more prone to
chatter, so it's a compromise as far as how high you set
the sensitivity.
I've air tested all three of them, and saw the same with the air test.
In order to get 10-11 inches from the big coil, I had to run it
nearly flat out. But.. it does get the extra depth when you do run
it hot.
But I will admit that the 9x12 is probably my least used coil by a
slight amount. The reason being that many of my hunting sites
are not an overly large area, and many are brushy and the big
coil is harder to swing through brush.
But if it's fairly open, I'll use the big coil.
Like many, I still like and use the stock coil quite a bit, and I
think the sniper is the best thing since sliced bread.. :)
I'm so sold on the sniper, I consider it a *must have* for
anyone really serious about an ace 250 or 150.
It's probably my favorite coil as far as the way it hits and
weeds through trash. And it's like swinging a broomstick.. :)
But I use the stock coil if I need a bit faster sweep vs the
sniper. At the moment my 250 is in my car trunk, and has
the stock coil on it.. So that was the one I was last using.
But I always carry all three coils no matter where I go, and
I'm quick to switch if I think one of the others might be better
for a certain place. I bought the 9x12 mainly as a open
field relic hunt coil more than anything, and for that, it does
have an edge over the stock coil by 2-3 inches on a coin
size object if run hot enough.

Yes. It IS heavy. I thought my arm was going to
fall off. I'm returning the thing in a couple days. Use the money
for something else. I need to get the Whites 6x10 or 4x6DD coil anyway.

We all need to contact Garrett with our thoughts about what we would like to
see on the Ace. Its only a matter of time until Garrett comes out with another machine, maybe a new Ace.
The more Input the more likey we'll SEE some of these suggesttions come to light.

Well, I think the Standard coil is enough. I do have the sniper 4.5 and an extra rod. Makes switching much faster.
The 9x12 goes back!!!!!! Heavy little sucker after awhile!
