Took the 5x10 for a walk today

to a CW site that I've beaten to death over the years. I put the coil on my Xterra 70 yesterday just to try it out and the balance is perfect. I dug 9 bullets and 3 buttons on ground that I've hunted with every other Xterra coil, except for the small ones. I don't think I'll be taking it off for a while. I'm sold.

Do you mean the 5"x10" beat and was better at that site than the 10.5" MF or HF round coils ??

That could very well be true, but hard to believe.

For coins the 5x10 is quickly becoming my favorite.

It's interesting to hear this because the 5x10" Elliptical Double-D was originally designed for use in the mineralized soils of the Goldfields and yet so many coin & relic hunters are getting a good result from it in noisy ground and on the beaches. The DD coils usually out-perform Mono and Concentric coils in highly mineralized conditions so perhaps the area you are in is putting out a bit of ground noise? Either way, you seem to have been won over! Keep us updated on your finds.

Cheers!

Marco

Yeah but the 5"x10" HF DD being better than the 10.5" MF or HF DD round coils in (highly?)mineralized conditions for bullets and buttons ?

Don't you think the 10.5" MF or HF DD round coils should go deeper in mineralized ground, or not ?

I would assume the 10.5 coils would go deeper, and having used both, I'm sure they do. But as a relic hunter I'm not generally going over nice smooth even ground. Putting the 5x10 in places the other coils can't go, and not catching on every branch and twig that presents itself I'm sure has something to do with it. The 5x10 has adequate depth, and in air tests it easily equals that of the 9 inch coils. And of course ground coverage is pretty good with the 5x10, and it's hot on brass and copper. The balance is perfect, and you can swing it all day without any arm discomfort. Let's face it-the 10.5 coils are heavier and make the detector unbalanced. But on farm fields they are hard to beat.
