Took My V3i to a pounded site for a hot but short Hunt....:usan:

Hi Neighbors

well this site is very old and one of the trashiest sites I know of.......it has been hunted by my E,LTD,by me and a bus load of people, that gave up and every detector and coil I own!
A small coil is the only way to go and I have used them at this site on all my detectors......I had really been wanting to give the Spectra a shot at it but was not expecting much and I had forgot my 4X6 shooter DD coil one of my favorite whites coils in trash.....I had grabbed my Vi and 5.3, D2 and 950 but left my shooter behind....pulled up to the site it is very hot today down here....
Said what the heck give it a whirl......I tried CJ and my jim program these where way to hot for this site......loaded relic and it was Awesome alittle bleed thru on a few square nails but only on a few on surface... I am sure this can be tweaked easy enuff....but I just kick the problem child out the way with a good boot scrape....I found targets that are not supposed to be there Brass carriage parts old lipstick tubes and my favorite.... shot gun shells......these are my keepers a 1951s and colonial Button ....I know..... but for a short hunt 1 hour 10 min. and stock program out of the box with no adjustments......I am impressed, Knowing this Site!

Jim,

Trashy areas is where my V3i also shines. It's a 'rush' to find anything of value in places you know from experience havent produced anything in a long while.

The V3i is able to sort the good targets from the bad with ease.

This V3i has definitely woken up my old sites!

I love "hunted out" sites, they are the places where the good stuff lives and others have removed a lot of the trash for you. You just have to know how to read iffy signals and you'll find some good stuff.

FWIW... I got my head right yesterday evening with some Bakers and something else *cough*...

Tomorrow, unless it rains all day I am going to go hunting somewhere. I am going to carry my V3, SovereignGT, E-TRAC, and probably T2 with the small coil. That should keep me busy. I wish I could get comfortable with the V3. I really like it but it almost always seems to be jumpy and too much like work... maybe I need to get my head right about it. I think I just don't quite understand it, it is the only White's i've ever used but i'm going to keep on with it.

Today is my youngest grand daughter's 2nd birthday.... going to a party later!

Jbow,

May I suggest you try to lower the sens alot and let the V3 do its magic? Here in Fl, the ground is soft and sandy and things usually sink very deep. When I first got the v3, I cranked the sens and gain wayyyyy up thinking more is better. To make a long story short, the settings I use now are ridiculously LOW compared to what others are using and suggesting.

I use Rx gain of 4 and have the sens set to about 50 or less, usually 40 to be exact.

The performance is very good and its not difficult to snag a 8-9 inch quarter in the ground EVEN though it wont pick it up that far in air tests.

The way I settled into these settings is because when I would hear a deep target, I would lower the settings to see how low I could actually go. I was very surprised at what I found out by doing this.

My detecting buddy would have his unit maxed out and and ask for a second opinion on the target he found and to both our surprise, the V3 could easily hear it at 4 & 40 so that is where I have left it and to date, he has not found a target I couldnt confirm yet. Sad thing is, he has to put up with all the sizzling in his headfones and jumpy ID and lack of overall stability. while I enjoy a very smooth ride with the V set this way.

I tend to run single freq of 7.5.

Anyway, consider trying to lower your settings and see if you experience the same results. The jumpiness will be gone if you do so and the depth should still remain.

Of course, your MPGs may vary.

I usually always run the RX gain on 4 but I tseems end to have the disc sens much higher. I will try lowering it. It just seems like not the thing to do, but I guess you know that since you did it too... Lower sens it is. I have a new 8x6 SEF to try. I really like the D2 coil a lot too, and the 4x6. I am a big fan of DD coils.

I'll let you know how it goes... I think you hit the nail on the head.

J

While you are at it, try rx gain at 10ish and sens at 1 !

If its quiet, start raising the rx gain towards max and see how you do. This was another eye-opener.

Best of luck

Tony

Well... that just sounds all wrong... but i'll try it.

My understanding was that the disc sens (if you're hunting in disc) controls the depth and the RX gain just amplifies what you are already hearing, EMI and ground included. That is why I usually keep my RX low and the disc sens as high as I can without falsing, but right now i'll try anything.

Some sites I hunt... everything runs smooth, other sites trying to use the V3 is like turning on a beehive.

I'll check it out.

J

Oh.... J&T...... hope you guys get out and enjoy your holiday....
I'll be sweating over a hot grill and chilling in the pool...but as soon as the wind picks up i will be pounding the ground....

PS remember Our boys Over seas ...I Am VERY Thankful my only Son.... is back after two desert deployments and working civilian now !

J, knowing what you know about the gain and sens, it should be interesting to try and note the results. I am not suggesting to run it this way, yet, if it works, go for it. The main reason for suggesting it is to see what the settings can do. Hopefully the results will be of some use in future settings.

Jim, be sure to tell your son thanks from all of us, I am glad he is BACK too ! Also, sorry for running your post in the wrong direction.

have a safe weekend

Hey proud dad!! I am glad your son is home.

In any case I am thankful for all our armed forces and am thankful for their sacrifice for our freedom*. My dad was in the 11th Airborne division.

*except the damn yankees, IMO they could have sacrificed a lot more.

I took the V3 out in the garden because I know what is there, how deep it is (7-8 inches) and how bad the ground is. First I did a ground balance then, in C&J, I dropped the disc sens to 10 and raised the RX gain to 15. Using an 8x6 SEF coil I was easily able to hit all the targets... even a dime at about 8" (it may be slightly deeper). I also have a minnie at 8" that consistantly reads high, it reads in the 90s on the V3 but the 7.5 hump is higher on the analize screen. When I check with the ground probe, after zeroing with the coil on the ground about a foot to the side, 2.5 has the highest signal strength...

BUT... it worked very well.

Then I lowered the sens to 1 with the RX on 15... it still hit everything. I raised it to 20 and everything was great. I ended up leaving it on 25. On 25 I could run RX 15 with TX boost on. It would overload with the coil in the air but as soon as I lowered it to the ground it stopped overloading and worked well. I turned TX back off and played with correlate but best data worked better. I tried single frequency 7.5 normalize both on and off and all went well.

I think this is just what I needed and I am really amazed at the depth and VDI and stability I got using the 8x6 coil with the disc sens on 25 and even on 10 (actually I could tell no difference between sens=10 and sens=25 but I figure if 25 works well i'll use it unless there is some reason I shouldn't.

This is exactly what this machine needed. I cannot thank you enough and I can't wait to see how it does with the D2, 5.3, and 4x6. I hope that 14x9 coil is "V" nulled but I have my doubts.

Thanks again!!!

Julien

That is One cool patch you father wore in WWII......I know you are Pround.... Thanks for sharing!

You would like my dad, he is 93. So is my mom. They still live at home by themselves.

My grandfather was killed working on the RR when my dad was a baby, my great-grandfather was already dead so my dad was rasied by his mom and his great-grandfather who was a 2nd LT in the Confederate Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Grandpa Chapman. He died when my dad was about 10.

So when you talk to my dad it is like talking to a "real son" of a Confederate veteran. To my dad the Republican party is the "party of Lincoln". My belly button was "where the yankee shot me".

Sometimes history seems long ago and far away. Other times you realize it was just yesterday. Not many people think about the fact that it was less than 80 years between our independence and the civil war. Then it is really sobering when you think that it was almost exactly 80 years between the end of the civil war, with mostly muskets and horse cavalry, and the end of WWII that ended with an nuclear bomb. 1865/1945 That just amazes me everytime I think about it.

Time is short... make the best of it. I think the end is near.

J

Hi Julien,

Glad you took the time to give the suggestion a try, probably even more so, I am glad it worked for you too.

If you want to preach the word of low sens which equates to stability while maintaining good depth and super target ID etc etc, feel free to do so.
IMO, it would appear SOOO WRONG to come in behind those that preach the higher setting philosophy.

I have been using the V3i for a long time and running it as mentioned above works great with every coil too.

My approach to setting the V3 is from the bottom up, meaning start with low sens and gain and THEN bump it up a hair as needed.

Hoping you have continued success out in the field

Tony

This has changed using the V3 from being work to being a pleasure.

Thanks!

Went out and tried your experiment with the low settings. I have only one coin in my target bed (live in an apartment) which is a quarter slightly on edge at 7.5 inches or so.

With my 950 coil, filters at 5mhz band, best data & 3 freq (no salt) I couldn't get a whiff of it until my sens was cranked up to 40. That said, I settled on a setting of 10/60/60 as being about 80% as deep as my maximum settings (could detect the coin and ID more accurately than my max settings, but only up to about an inch off of the ground). This would be an excellent setting for me in areas where my detector has a hard time being stable.

With my old max settings (08-12/70/92) I could get 2-2.5 inches off of the ground on this coin with this coil (however then VDI would scew to about 90-92 on most hits). I then found that if I use the 2.5mhz frequency with settings of 10/60/80 that I could smoke my old record (an easy 4 inches off of the ground, so 11-12 inches total on coin) and give a great VDI (84-8:geek:. The only problem with this setting is that it screams whenever I get near ANY emi (within 40 ft of my apartment for instance).

Now I somehow need to decide whether it is better to run 3 freq best mode with salt to deal with emi (what I have been doing, but knocks down my depth a bit), or 3 freq corrolate (knocks me down even more), or the ultra conservative settings (10/60/60).

I wish that 2.5mhz wasn't so jumpy, even backing the sens & gain down to 1 I cant get near my building.

Anyways, good food for thought. I will try again with my 6x10 and see how it compares.
