First site was one of my favorite ghost town sites. This site has been good to me over the last couple of years with Seated and Barber coins and relics. The underbrush this time of year makes it hard to hunt but I did manage the two Indian heads. Had to use the 9 1/2 inch coil which didn't help either. Tons of iron at this site. I do have a small Bullseye coil on the way so I will be hitting it hard this winter. The second site was an old park that I haven't hunted in years. The rest of the coins came from this park. Not to many people hunt this park so it's always good for a silver or two. Most of the coins were in the 4-6 inch range and gave solid Locks. One of the Indians at the ghost town had a couple of nails in the same hole. Shortening my sweep and hitting it a different angles gave a decent audio signal on every other sweep. The meter jumped from iron to zinc penny and back with each sweep. In pinpoint I could see there was more than one target so the meter did a good job. I think with the small coil it's going to be a killer at some of my old lumber mill and logging camp sites.

Crazy;man,

Nice finds! Can't make out the tokens to well in the pic. How about some more info on them...

Howdy crazyman

Between my 6000 Pro XL and IDX Pro, I have just about the perfect pair of detectors to cover any piece of ground in my area. With these two models I have the Bullseye, Precision scan 800, and stock Blackmax 950 coil. The 950 does a better job at trashy sites mounted on my IDX Pro than on my 6000 Pro XL. And this is why you here all the bad things written about the 950 coil. If the 950 coil is mounted on my faster sweep 6000 it does ok in a semi trashy spot, but not as good as when the larger 950 is mounted on the IDX. I keep the bullseye mounted full time on my 6000, and never take it off except to mount it on the IDX on a really trashed out spot. The precision scan 800 is very good on both. What is cool about this setup is that with some extra lower rods you can easily mount these three coils interchangably. Have a good'n...........Hombre

Hombre, I've been using the Whites 5900/6000 series for over 20 years as my main detectors and the newer XL Pro for a couple of years now. I have never been without one and still think they are the best detectors ever made. I've been using the Minelab Advantage with the 5 inch Excelerator coil the last couple of years when hunting the thick wooded iron infested logging camps around here but I'm hoping the IDX Pro with the small coil will be even better.

Tiger, those are old tax tokens. They are pretty common finds here in Wa. and I have a large bowl of them I've found over the years. Funny thing is the one on the left is a Oklahoma tax token. I don't know how that ended up in a park in Washington State.

[size=large]I'm presently researching several Oregon Lumber Camps that fit that title of "ghost town" that I haven't hunted before. Many of those I hunted in the 70's and 80's are quite grown over now :( and I need some fresh sites to visit.

I keep the 6

Make sure you incdule us on those hunts, Monte!!

These are some of my typical coin finds at some of my ghost town and logging camp sites. Not to mention the relics. I enjoy doing research and have some sites I haven't even hunted yet. I've been hunting a certain lumber mill ghost town 1850's thru 1920's close to where I live for the last couple of years. It is huge and employed a couple of thousand people at onetime. The different ethnic groups and workers also had there own little towns that bordered the main town with there own stores, churches and hotels. There is no sign that this place even existed if you where to drive by but take a walk back in the woods and you see the broken china, broken bottles and wood stove parts just laying on top of the ground. It' s amazing the amount of undiscovered hunting sites just waiting to be hunted. All it takes is a little research.

Some quality coin finds you made there..

I've been neglecting my old girl (IDX Pro) since I got the new Hooker(XLT). I might have to re-think the decision and start taking the ol girl out every once in awhile. I thought I would find more with the newer tech XLT, especially since she has VCO and tone ID. Glad your having a good time with you Hot rod IDX! Tim

Do you really think the modifications helped a great deal?
Have you had an opportunity to do any comparisons to see differences?

Mark, in my ground yes. We have some really nasty ground here and it can go from bad to very bad from one site to another. We also have an abundance of hot rocks so having a machine with manual GB or at least auto ground tracking is a must. I prefer manual over auto tracking. My XL Pro and older 6000 Pro SL that I used for many years had auto tracking but I never used it as I would lock the GB once the balance was set at the site I was hunting. My IDX Pro with the mods. enables me to set it up to get the best depth at any site including the beach. The best thing about the mods. is that I can fine tune the GB to handle the hotrocks. To get the best depth I don't want to tune out the rocks completely so I set it to give a slight response. So far I'm very impressed with the IDX Pro with the mods. Also I can't believe the depth I'm getting with the little Bullseye coil. I've only had the little coil for a short time so I won't swear to it just yet but I think it might go as deep as the 9 1/2 coil in my ground.

markg, for me YES! I bought a IDX Pro for my wife, five years ago. I bought it new at a brick and mortar hobby store back at that time. My wife isn't really into metal detecting, so I am the only one who might put it to use. This last year I regained momentum on getting back into the hobby. I started benchmarking the IDX Pro against other machines I have. Initially I wasn't real impressed with the detector because I like manual GB and user adjustable audio.

I had read on a couple of the forums the popularity of the IDX Pro, and the praise of the Mr. Bill mods. I decided to give the IDX Pro another look see, to validate what other users saw in the unit. I went back to the benchmarking, and double checked all my previous observation/tests. I chanced that I would send it in for Mr Bill mods to see if that would help performance.

I got my IDX Pro-m back two weeks ago. I have been out on my test targets with it using the 4x6 DD Shooter, 350 BM, and the Pro 9.5 coil. Before sending in the unit for upgrades, the all metal mode, and pinpoint function had a high threshold tone while using headphones. The factory setting made this mode un-desirable for any thoughts of a All metal search mode. It was also quite annoying when trying to contour, or pinpoint in the triggered pinpoint mode/function. I have the Grey Ghost headphones, and while I could have turned down the headphone volume to be more palatable, I knew that it was too high, and small or deep targets, would be missed or over shadowed by the factory set threshold level.

Post mods' I now have the ability to ground balance, to my specific ground conditions. With a audio threshold I can use, and a manual GB control, I can be self assured of ground balance setup anywhere I might hunt. I have noticed an improved detection depth, whether it is through a more precise ground balancing, or Sensitivity tweaks made during the upgrade/mod, I am not sure. I had tested the detector before I planned to send it in - on my test targets. That was when the soil had a good moisture content. I am now testing post modifications, however in dry, hard soil and I do see a improvement in detector performance even though the soil environment condition is worse! After my bone dry and hard soil condition testing of a couple different detectors, I will water the area down so I can compare better the true performance increase. My observation is hard, dry soil inhibits good target detection.

The IDX Pro lacks a battery check function, the pre mod factory Audio Threshold was usable, but not desirable for me.. The addition of the Audio Threshold adjustment, and the manual GB adjustment installed by the Mr. Bill mods have gave me a more favorable liking to this detector. I know that I will be much happier with the IDX Pro-m than I would have been with the non-mod unit.

My 2 cents worth,
Square Nail

Very interesting stuff and great finds. I live in Washington, thought I recognized that tax token. I hunt the water as I live in the Puget Sound area. You're doing good work.
