Took my crucifix to the jeweler

He tested it and proclaimed it 10 K, weighing 3.5 grams. Here's the front - no karat stamp to be seen. Sometimes it is among the design so you have to look with a magnifier.

And here's the back, also no karat stamp. The bubbles on the surface indicate it might have been home made. The jeweler made a scratch at the bottom you can see and put an acid in it. The scratch is necessary to get below a possible gold plating - if there was one. It counteracts with the gold and turns a particular color for each karat. I thought my test kit might have lost it's power so I did this today. I'll get another test kit now as mine didnt show the same. I have been told the chemicals lose their potency after about 8-10 years.
So if you dig something that looks like gold & has no stamp - take it to be checked out. A recommended pawnshop operator tested it for me as my regular jeweler was not available today. Steve in so az
