Took Another Pirate Cruise in the Good Ship 'Plumbago' this time to the Old US Naval Base.

I decided to try my luck at the old US Naval Base on Morgan's Island, it was opened in WWII and closed down at the end of the Cold War. There are two beaches there, one for the officers and one for the enlisted men and I hoped to find some older finds and memorabilia. Perhaps an officer's ring or at least a wedding band, such was not to be. I found plenty of clad, $3.00 +, a 1961 British Large Penny with a bullet hole neatly punched through the middle (nice shooting) and my first ever Wheatie - 1944. I know a wheatie won't sound like much to most of you but to find a Wheatie in the waters of Bermuda and be able to identify it is a rare find indeed. Copper corrodes quickly in these salty waters and there are few wheaties to find in the first place. The officer's beach was fully of blank cartridges which made the hunting difficult but the scenery was fabulous as both beaches are located in a secluded bay at the back of the base surrounded by Caesarina trees and Bay Grapes.
I pulled into the old hotel beach on my way back to the mooring but it was nothing but clad yet again, that and lots of sea urchins which had crawled back into the shallows after I tossed them into deep water yesterday, annoying little critters. Still it was a Bermudaful Sunny Day with a high of 74F which made it quite warm in my farmer john wetsuit everytime I got into shallower waters. Two frosty Heinekens in the ice chest helped quench the thirst I built up over a 4 hr. hunt.

What a Great Way to Spend an Afternoon in Bermuda,

Today I'm off to try another hotel beach and I'm hoping for better luck this time.

You must really get in the Pirate mode cruising the same waters of Pirates of the past. Can't waite till you get your Camera back and send some of those beautiful pics. of the waters of Bermuda. Congrats on the wheatie, I understand the excitement that is how I would be if I found a 1944 Bermuda coin here in Fl. Thanks for sharing , HH

I decided to clean up the old British pennies this morning just out of curiousity and a very badly encrusted one held a surprise for me. It has an eblem like a palace on the front and a laurel wreath at the bottom, the remains of bright red lacquer that original covered the piece also became evident once I removed the crud and coral build up. The style suggests the Victorian period (1800's) and it has a definite British look about it, it is also exactly the same diameter as an old British penny but a little thinner and you can see two mounting points that have worn away on the plain back of this piece. Now I have a bit of a mystery on my hands which is fine by me as I love a good mystery. You just never know what you're going to find when you go alooting!

Cheers,
