Took a plunge today...few questions

So I finished a pond I started yesterday. I use a fisher 1280 aquanaut. Not to bad change wise. I found about 7 dollars total. Mostly in quarters...tarnished so they were there since last year.

I found about 5 pennies. And mayne just as many dimes. Not one nickle...any thoughts on that?

What I am wondering is if some one went through the pond and left all the garbage/coins? There were a few nails and bobby pins. I ask this because I didnt even find a silver ring.

Maybe just nothing there or had been cleaned out mid last summer. Not sure. Wasn't a total loss at least. I got better spots I am waiting for access to anyway.

Hey Joe , I doubt it. Me personally I will dig everything that sounds even remotely like a ring...and I am happy to get that change as well. That's my gas money! Hehehe. If you pulled $7.00 of change out of there I'll give you one piece of advice. "go back" Go back and creep the area and i'll bet you there's some goodies there.

keep looking...
nice finds tho

Again Dig is right, it's there, but could be mask by the junk. dig some junk for awhile and see if your get some good targets from the same area. Gene

You know Gene thats another good thought that people should take into consideration. If you go over an area and clean out everything but the junk...later on go back for that junk and you'll be suprised to find that sometimes it masks some better finds that were just sitting there the whole time. One of my favorite stories is from a local buddy who went out after a storm and found his usual beach cut way back....problem was he was finding huge slabs of iron from an old ship all over...so he and another detectorist dragged the iron away. Underneath he found an engagement ring worth over 10k.

Joe, Just read through your post quickly. You said that you didn't find any nickles. What is your discrimination setting at? I am familiar with the 1280X and I leave the disc. knob at between 2-3. Any higher and you may lose gold signals. That being said, I don't usually find near as many nickles as I do quarters and dimes(in the water). I just don't think that nickles get used all that much. HH!

Ok. Im gonna go back. Thanks for all the advice. All good stuff. I am gonna go slooooow.... be more thorough and dig some of the trash signals. And...my discrimination was way higher than 2-3. More like 5-6. Im gonna have to wait until tomorrow to do this....tomorrow morning. Ill post my results afterwords. Its should only take me about 4 hours to do. Anyway...HH -Joe

Id like to thank all of you very much. As you can see I found a lot more iron trash. I found four nickles a few dimes and a few pennies.

The first goodie I found was the little doggy. I think its part of a silver charm. Maybe white gold...but highly doubt it [its also tiny...was near shore and dumped scoop out to look for it that way].

Second thing I found was a gold plated ring...broken. The signal for that was kinda faint...sorta like a dime or bottle top. Its broken. It had a stone in it...probably fake.

Third thing I found was a gold class ring with what looks like emerald stone. I shit my pants when I found it. I had gone over that area a few times.

I am only about a third done. I have to go back tomorrow. and finish. Some issues today pulled me outta the water.

AGAIN...THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!!! Sorry for caps locks...I am wicked happy.

ps. I will look up the ring and find its owner...if it was just a ring id keep it. But...being as how I can find its owner with relative ease I will try that root first.

HH -Joe

Nice going on the gold! I think I know how you feel. I like to see persistence and hard work pay off. HH!

Way to go Bro! Hahaha yeah $7.00 wort of change and no goodies rarely makes for good math. Go back again, I will tell you now there is still more there.

also might want to turn down the discrimate as it might be to high for any gold as you did'nt say if you were finding any pull tabs
or alum. foil, i can'nt say for sure but you might try that tooalso try it from a diff. angle 90 deg from the first way you walked ect...

Going back today to try and finish. Not my first gold ring. Its my first of this year and first with this detector. I detected for the summer of 2002 with the same machine model...only it was ancient. I also only went a few times. For one reason or another it got sold...and I didn't really detect again until this summer. With that machine I found three silver rings [one mens wedding ring] and one crappy gold ring 10 k. My first ring with that machine was a tiny gold toe ring....so it was actually a total of 5 rings.

Might as well count this as my first ring gold. I didn't even remember how to have the settings. Anyways. This is gonna be a long day. Wish me luck. I got 2/3 of swim hole left to do...should find some more goodies...hope so. Thanks for all the help. HH -Joe

Run the disc as low as you can pards (hehe that explains your lack of nickels..and gold)and creep creep along with it. I'm bettin you're are coming out of there with some more gold!

Just clad today. Cant get gold every time. Interesting thing. I found about 5-6 quarters that made more like faint signals. They weren't deep by any means and I had combed that area once before. I still got an area to do tomorrow. I work nights so I get to go out during days. Tomorrow should be better hopefully. At first I had my discrimination at like 5-6. Now I got it set around 2...just above it. Anyways...gotta run. Thanks for tips. I know there is more stuff there. There has to be. HH -Joe

Maybe I missed it but, curious, what part of the country(world) are you?

I live in massachusetts. Its still chilly...water is cold. I got decent wetsuit. So Im in there. I really wanna cleanup this pond before I move on to another site. Its only a matter of time before it gets detected. I can't wait to get done to some parts of the cape. Fuel prices are a bummer though. HH -Joe

Discrimination?? No wonder your not finding gold. Either NO discrimiation at 0 or 1 at the most. dig ALL medium sounds. Never use discrimination in the water!! You will pass up lots of interesting items. Bell tones bring GUNS, Zippo lighters, knives , anchors cans and tools.

You need to go back over the whole area. GL !!!!
