you've found most indian head pennies fall into. I say range, cause I know they tend to range in conductivity quite a bit...

Thanks,

Don't they? C$/Edge/Excel....Maybe slight differences by a digit or 2?
All's I have noticed is that the early "Fat" indians read alot lower & if you use a notch like a tab or something they are gone.....
Dop't have a red book handy, but I know they changed the metal content of 'em a few times. Some bronze in 'em & stuff maybe?

The composition was:

1856-1858 Flying Eagle's, .880 copper and .120 nickel.
1859-1864 Indian's, .880 copper and .120 nickel.
1864-1909 Indian's, .950 copper and .050 tin & zinc.
1909-1942 Lincoln's, .950 Copper and .050 tin & zinc.
1943 Lincoln's were zinc coated steel.
1944-1946 Lincoln's, .950 copper and .050 zinc.
1947-1962 Lincoln's, .950 copper and .050 tin & zinc.
1962-1982 Lincoln's, .950 copper and .050 zinc.
1982-present - who cares?

I haven't used the Edge, but the C$ & Excel are real close. Most of mine have been anywhere from 16 - 19. Lot's of factors can affect it......... depth, orientation, soil conditions and so on.

It looks like the later IH's and the early wheats had the same composition. It seems like the Indians get a better patina though..?
