tones

i have found that once you pick up on the tones the machine produces, you can easily discern between good targets and garbage. Depths vary between surface and about 10 inches. the conductivity number on the machine can be deceiving i.e. 37 or 38 for a copper penny while zincs will be 33 or 34. however; the tones don't lie and if you can pick up on it there is a difference in sound.

HI Kraut,
I agree, one thing I have found as far as the sound versus the VID is that if I am getting a sweet high silver tone and a low number, ie, in the teens it has been consistently junk. (mostly rusty bottle caps) If anyone else has seen different please let us know. It does get frustrating to dig a penny when you would swear it is a quarter.
Thanks for starting this thread.
HH,
Bunker

bunker,

Smaller brass pieces, cuff buttons (both military and flat buttons), epaulette fragments and turnbuckles, ring with a high flutey tone and a TID/VID of 12-14. While that tone/number combination may not be one that coin hunters like it is a keeper for relic hunters.

kraut,

To me, the tones are the strength of the Safari, an incredible amount of info if you take the time to learn the sounds.

Hey Tom,
That is good to know, I hope to do some relic hunting further north sometime soon. Don't want to pass anything up! When I hunt in Al. and Ga. I normally dig it all.
Thanks and HH,
Bunker

Bunker I may have misunderstood you about bottle caps sounding like silver. I have never dug a bottle cap thinking it was silver by tone sound. And usually those caps are not that deep. HH :minelab:

Hershey1,
The bottle caps that I pull out are really old and rusty. They sing like a Merc but have that low VID. I have dug them out of curiosity 5+ inches. But Tom is right, when you are relic hunting that could be a good sign.

O.K. Bunker I do the same thing when I've got plenty of time and relic hunting. If I'm in a place where I've dug some mercs or barbers I dig any thing close like everyone else does. Love the sound of that silver. HH :minelab:
