Tones on the X-terra

I've been using my X-terra 70 off and on for about 18 months and I love the machine, but I want to try and hunt more with just the tones. I have tried switching over to the 99 tones mode (I know its only 2:geek: a few times and it seems a little overwhelming, but I want to get away from relying so much on the TID and I'm going to try and ignore the numbers and listen for the higher peeps in among the iron sounds. My question is, does the audio have better depth than the TID or is it tied to the TID? Also, has anyone run any tests to see just how deep can you get a shift out of an iron ID to something higher, if there is a good target there? For instance, will the 10.5" DD coil have enough separation to give a higher tone on a button at 8" (of course assuming it isn't masked by iron)? My biggest grip with TID is that deep targets seem to all ID as Iron past a certain depth. I think that probably has to do with ground conditons as much as anything, because it seems to happen sooner in bad ground.

greetings,

I am looking to purchase an x-terra 70 minelab. is anyone selling one or know someone who is selling one?

I dabble in 99 tones every once in a while. Reminds me of my old explorer. I've noticed in our ground that ID can definitely be erratic at depth. Not really sure how a variety of tones would help. I know you like to hit relics (BTW...I sent you a PM recently ) and in those sites wouldn't you dig all the deep signals anyway?

The TID is "tied" to the audio as the software is designed to provide an audio and visual response. But the visual TID lags behind the audio sounds. For that reason, I hunt by tone and verify with TID. I've described a technique I use to help identify deeply buried iron in a couple previous posts. Recently, I wrote an article for Minelab that should be appearing soon on their Treasure Talk blog about this very subject. Briefly, once you get the target centered under the coil, slowly drag the coil toward your feet while continuing to sweep back and forth over the target. When the target leaves the detection field, if the audio breaks off without changing tones, it is likely a keeper. But if the audio produces a series of what I call "harmonic tones", it is likely iron. By harmonic tones, I mean a combination of low tones and the high tone that got your attention in the first place. To hear these harmonics, you must be using multiple tone mode with zero discrimination. As I said, I provided an article to Minelab that is going to be posted to Treasure Talk soon. It includes a complete description of the process, as well as audio clips so you can hear the difference between iron and coins. As soon as I find out it has been posted to Treasure Talk, I'll let you know here on the X-TERRA forum. HH Randy

Wayne, on known CW sites, yes I dig all targets. How do you know if its deep? I find that the arrow system of depth indication is not all that reliable, unless you are hunting coins and size your target first. With relics, its hard to tell depth with the sound on a digital machine because its pretty much the same regardless of depth. However, on sites I think might have been a campsite or a skirmish area and I'm trying to locate it, I'm trying not to waste a lot of time on digging everything. Once I find a period piece or bullet, then it becomes a dig everything proposition and out comes the Tejon in all metal mode.

In the camps that I have hunted, I've found that 99% of the time that if I have all the arrows showing, good high tone at least 2 ways and the vid bounces from the high 20's to the 40's, that it is a good deep target.................MO
