I had a Mark 1 just like that one at one time, I got it off my brother, I should have kept it, but I didn't!

I do like the ID tone of those old Teknetics, my 8500 does the same thing, but it sounds like the Mark 1 may have a little more of a chirp than the 8500 does.

Can you set the reference pitch on the Mark 1, I can't remember?
On the 8500/9000 you can run the threshold reference tone any where on the meter scale, I run mine at S.Caps so nickles drop low, copper and silver goes up.

Nice detector.
Now, what in the world were you thinking when you got rid of your other Teknetics stuff. I know I really liked my old 9000, more than once I have looked for a Teknetics Eagle but never found one, I ended up with the 8500 and I still wish I could have found a Eagle.

Hi Mark
I had a Very Nice TeK Condor at one time....and I still preferred the tones of the Mark-1..
Can you set the reference pitch on the Mark 1, I can't remember
The Mark-1 has a tone control that changes the pitch in the All-Metal Mode and threshold
but does not change the pitch of the tones in the discriminate....
Now, what in the world were you thinking when you got rid of your other Teknetics stuff
Now thats a good question! .....I'm tired of searching for detectors to replace the mark-1's tones..
It's just not going to happen....
I'm now in the process of getting all the parts needed to do another Mark-1 mod.... I will
do the depth mod and will try to install a Frequency changer I acquired inside the control box.
I was lucky to find out that Whites had one more XL Pro part left that I used in making my last mod..
So i should have it within a week.....

The only bummer with those old Tek machines is the battery clips. I had a hawk and had them replace 3 times! I know this was the kelly co. version, But I think this holds true for all old Tek models.

Yes the original battery clips are not very durable...But the ones from Keith Wills are twice as thick and should last...I always
install all the outside batterys then the inner ones last...Duggr

My 9000 was over ten years old when I got rid of it with a bad display, but the battery clips were like new. Same with the Mark 1 but I knew they were dinky so I was always very careful with them. My 8500 I have now had already had battery clip problems, but by looking at them I can tell they were not taken care of.
But, they battery clips were a known problem and
The displays went bad on about ALL of the 9000. I bought two new displays for mine and they were already bad from just being in storage. That's why I wanted an Eagle because it had a analog meter, but I never found one.

Looking forward to seeing the Mark 1 mod Doug, You''ve always put out excellent workmanship so this one should be another beauty.

Plus, If you need spare parts please feel free and let me know what you need.

My next mod will be a Mark III, Picked one up last year and was impressed with the tones and depth. Just need to balance it out a bit, Should be a fun project.

Take care,
Paul (Ca)

I've heard the term "Depth Mod" referenced to these older Teknetics, and even applied to the 8500. I would sure like to have (get) some more information about doing it?

Mark

I think Keith Wills of broken detector repairs doe's them. Just google broken detectors repair and his name and they have his web site and number.

Thanks Paul!... I've always enjoyed seeing your "creative and Unique idea's".. They always
inspire me To be creative as well!.... I'll keep you in mind about the parts! Look forward to seeing the
Mark-III Mod!!!
Doug

...MarkCZ....I guess that I was lucky and recently scored a "CONDOR"....WHICH i Think is the Kellyco version of the 9000B...the display meter on mine is working great....i talked to a repair technician and was told that IF the Displays do go BAD...that an analog meter could be installed instead.......George Payne remarked that he was surprised that the LCD's on these detectors were still working....Soo considering all and the test of time ....I think the Teknetics have held up well....and the only real problem was/is the battery clips.....Joe

The condor isn't a Kelleyco version of the 9000, it was Teknetics improved later model replacement for the 9000. Along the same time Teknetics replaced the 8500 with the Eagle.
The 9000 and the 8500 were both four filter machines, the condor and the Eagle were three filter (I believe) and had slower sweep speeds and also were a little deeper running.

No it may be possible to replace the LCD with an analog meter, but it would take somebody with a lot of knowledge to do it. The LCD displays are much more complex than the two wired analogs (I've never heard of it being done)

I have heard of the Condor displays holding out pretty good, but the ones in the 9000 almost always died. The displays are sandwiched between two pieces of sealed glass, what happens is the seal goes bad in one place or another and then the displays bleeds or smears and loses parts of its detail and can even go black.

No One In The World Makes A Replacement Display For Those Detectors! They could and its been priced but it would be thousands of dollars for one! now if you order 10 or 20 thousand of them then you could get them for a few bucks a piece.

BIG BUD HAS SAME TONES AND SAME BATTERY CLIP QUALITY
ALMOST SAME COIN METER AND ITS SAME STATIC STICKING PROBLEM
CAN TELL MANY THINGS ABOUT A COIN WITH IT LIKE WIDTH NOT JUST TONE
WISH THE NEWBIE MACHINES WOULD BE BETTER ON TONE OR WIDTH SOUNDS

BIG BUD HAS SAME TONES

No the Tones of the Big Bud are nowhere as good as the older Teks

I never owned a Technetics Detector. The pic you showen here looks like a big detector. You mentioned "Tone Machine", the first tone machine that I owned was a Jetco Mustang. A beep and dig machine. Those were the good ol' days.

HI DUGGR IT'S THE CHIPMONK HERE FIRST EXCUSE MY CAPS I'M 71 YEARS OLD AND HARD OF SEEING. I REALLY ENJOYED YOUR POSTS ON THE MARK1 AND BIG BUD FROM YOU AND THE OTHER CONTRIBUTORS. THANK YOU GUYS. MY BEST FRIEND HAS TWO MARK 1'S AND THE RARE " ROADRUNNER" WHICH HE KEEPS TELLING ME HE'S GOING TO SELL ONE TO ME. SO I GOT TIRED OF WAITING AND PURCHASED A MARK 1 " PARTS MACHINE" ON LINE AND WANT TO BRING IT BACK TO LIFE AGAIN. I RESPECT YOUR FORUM STATEMENTS AND ADVISE AND WANTED TO ASK YOUR OPINION. MY MARK 1 NEEDS BATTERY CLIPS AND THE PLASTIC LOWER ROD IS BROKEN OFF AT WHERE IT BOLTS TO THE COIL HOLES BUT DOES WORK WHEN BATTERIES ARE IN IT. MY QUESTION IS THIS SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A PERSON ON ONE OF THE FORUMS WHOM MODIFIED THE MARK 1 WITH A BATTERY PACK OF 9 VOLTS AND AA'S TO ELIMINATE THE BATTERY CLIP PROBLEM BUT I WANTED YOUR ADVISE IF THIS WAS A WISE AVE. TO PURSUE? IN CLOSING YOUR RIGHT ON WHEN YOU SAID ABOUT THE TONE QUALITY AND METER ID OF THE MARK'S. MY BEST FRIEND WAS SO GOOD WITH HIS MARK 1 HE USE TO TELL ME BEFORE HE DUG A BOTTLE CAP WHICH BRAND OF BEER IT WAS!! - - -BUT THEN I DO HAVE A TENDENCY TO TEASE ON OCCASION. DUGGR HAVE A BLESS ONE ALVIN THE CHIPMONK.

Hello Chipmonk!

MY MARK 1 NEEDS BATTERY CLIPS
Try East Texas Metal Detectors for Brand New Heavy Duty Battery Clips...I would stick with
the original Battery setup as the Battery Doors won't fit like they should using the 9-volt conversion...
But if you still want to do the battery mod email me and i'll send you a link...
You can find the lower clevis you need from east texas also.....

MY BEST FRIEND WAS SO GOOD WITH HIS MARK 1 HE USE TO TELL ME BEFORE HE DUG A BOTTLE CAP WHICH BRAND OF BEER IT WAS!!
HE HE HE

Give us another shout if you need some other help!

I bought a Tek 8500b hipmount machine on ebay. It was listed as parts. Seller claims it will register when metal is passed by the coil. No further testing was done as he did not know anything about metal detectors. From reading the various forums, there are it seems many combinations to the tone outputs of this machine. I had wanted one since they came out of Teknetics. The origional, not the one now.
After reading it seems most of the digital machines only have 3 tones and they are flat. From the description the detector works, but when you know only a very little its hard to describe in detail. I am curious, what kind or depth this machine has.? I know it mat not compare to the newer machines. At the same time though, I have taken a machine I was very familiar with and beaten the digital ones because the user was going only by the meter. Am a bit giddy to run it againt my friends Whites MXT.
The coils that Garrett uses are eliptical in shape and hard to pinpoint. Falsed alot. Even when the sens was turned down. The Whites are easier to pinpoint.. Usually only one point, unlike some of the Garretts that can have several. I have had dgital machines, Had a Garrett 250, an MXT, just couldnt seem to get the performance out of them that I could out of a manualy controlled analog. Make any sense? I guess it comes down to the subtle tonal variations that analog tone machines have that a digital processor just cant duplicate. Miss having a threshold tone on the new ones as well. There is something to be said for the little bump that is barely noticed in a threshold tone that a silent machine would pass over.
My first real detector was A Jetco non disc I bought when I was 10 at an auction sale for 5 bucks. Mid 70's. Then a Whites with a multicoil. ran it till it died. Next was a Whites 5000 and a Garrett ADS. Later I bought a Fisher 1260 and a Tesoro Bandido. Really liked the Bandido. My last Garrett was an ACE 250 and just couldmt master the thing. Just didnt seem to be as stable as the manual machines I had.
Well guys, will let ya know when the Tek gets here. Also will update on how quick I can get it setup and working for me.
KEEP SWINGING AND DIG THE UNKNOWNS, YA NEVER KNOW WHAT MAY BE A GREAT FIND!

I've been intrigued ever since the mid-80's, when I purchased off the newstand the issue of Lost Treasure that had the review of the Mark 1. The ads for the Teknetics machines were also very enticing. Meanwhile, I was stuck with my Fingerhut detector and made do with that for many years.

I wanted to pay a little homage to these venerable machines that were the first to offer the features that almost all machines offered today still try to emulate. To do that, I made a webpage with the manuals for as many of these machines as I could find and put them in one place online. I've never owned one of the early Teks, but always hope to someday. Till then, all the info I have can be found here: http://www.whiteriverprep.com/vintage/tek/tek.html
