Used the Explorer range from day one, mine are getting a little dated now so was thinking about a CTX, numbers, position of cursor on screen etc, don't bother me as I hunt by sound. I'm judging by some of the videos I've watched that the tone response (pitch/quality) is pretty much the same on the CTX as found on the Explorer range?

My thoughts are that they are a bit different. I believe it has to do with the CTX being more accurate AND the CTX's more use of the FE 12. The older Explorers had more of a flute'ish shound when you hit a deep copper or silver. I believe the tones of the machines are generated by the numbers (FE/CO). I don't believe it uses a separate tone generator from a different source. As such it is the FE & CO numbers that determine the tones. The older explorers had the good solid CO, in most cases, but the FE has a tendency to fall all over the range. This bigger drifting of the FE causes the flute tone we love so much on the older models. The CTX works harder at taming that FE number and in doing so has less of a flute tone.

I love everything about the CTX far more than the E-Trac, for example, but I do like the tone of the E-Trac a tad better.

They will try to pound into your head that you should not try to turn the CTX into an Explorer and you should learn it for what it is. There is allot of truth to that. I have found MANY situations where I have appreciated that my CTX was not an Explorer. Unfortunately, tone ID still isn't on of them. I wouldn't put it that far behind an Etrac or Explorer, but IMO, the CTX is lacking in the sound quality department. Through trial and error, I have created programs that sound similar enough that I am now quite satisfied once again. More recent examples of BIG differences are guys who are making finds based on screen indications and no sound at all. That will never be me, I can promise you that. All in all though, I have gained a similar amount of confidence with the CTX in hand vs my explorer, in fact more with the CTX when the going gets tough. JJ

I rely on the tone to get my attention and the screen response to make my final decision. I found the screen to be far more accurate on the CTX at a greater depth. I can't say I have ever seen screen numbers and no audio with the exception of nulling. When targets are just beyond the tone limits I usually hear that thunk. If the numbers are within the right range I'll recover no matter what the sound is, but it must at least make the thunk.

I also remember that great "Flute" tone on the E-Trac and although your explanation is excellent, I do wish they could add this to the CTX.
