Toltec 100 oldie but goodie...

I had one years ago. It worked fairly well. NOT a depth demon for sure, but a good little park hunter. Sometimes it did not register nickels correctly..
..and as you stated. It is on the heavy side compared to todays detectors. In it's day it was on par with a lot of the other detectors weight..

I would say it would be a good buy for around 150 dollars or a little less..

I had one. I didn't use the meter. The tones are so smooth over a good target. You can sweep very slow listening for deep soft tones.

A nice detector. Depth not great with 8" coil about 6" on a dime maybe a little more. Separation is great on all Tesoro's. Nice and light hip mounted too.

Detectors I have now:
Tesoro Tejon
Fisher 1236x2
White's SurfMaster II vlf

Hi Dan,

I have used a Toltec 100 for about 6 years, great Disc. circuit in the iron, never dig any nails with it. I put a Troy Super 9 coil on it and it will get a dime down to 8" easily. I run it with the Disc. set at Min.... Sensitivity fairly high and Threshold turned up and this old Tesoro will surprise you.

and I always wanted to own one but never "pulled the trigger" on one. I had just bought the original Eldorado on the advice from the dealer because I was also interested in prospecting. I guess in a general sense the circuitry on both units were about on the same level since they were from the same time era.? Not to get off-topic here but just to back up what Hombre said....I always thought the Troy Super 9" coil gave my Eldorado a little "kick in the pants" at times!

detector for typical urban Coin Hunting. That's the benefit of having the TID display anyway, but it has its limitations.

For some of us who are aged and achy, the top-heavy configuration is kind of a burden.

The display is smallish and difficult for some to see, and it isn't the most effective performer in a variety of challenging sites.

The biggest weakness I found is that the Toltec 100, introduced about December of 1987, used the older, more limited lower-end Discriminate adjustment range. In short, it had more rejection at the minimum setting than an avid detectorist wants as that adds to target masking. The Bandido, introduced in March of 1990, brought us the ED-120 Discriminate circuitry which is much better than the earlier, more limiting Disc. designs.

I have a good friend who bought the Toltec 100 when it first came out and he still has and uses it, but I had one and didn't care for it. I liked the Toltec II much better for balance, and especially because it also has the ED-120 Disc. circuitry.

If it's just for typical Coin Hunting, and if you really want to give it a try, go for it and report back on the forum.

Dollar General has the Eveready Gold 9 volts at $ 2.5 and the AA at 2.25 per 4. At 500 Mah for the 9v and 2400 for the 8 AA, the AA actually works out to be quite a bit cheaper than the 9v, which surprised me. This assumes similar draw among the AA and 9v units, which may not hold true.

BTW, the Eveready Gold actually seems to last longer than Energizer or Duracell on some current draw tests I saw.

Thanks fellas had one years ago and hip mounted or adjusting the pole short so its just at your feet makes it seem much lighter..Got my oldest U.S.silver coin on edge(1839 seated dime with it) along with my nicest mans gold ring and a whopper of a gold chain not to mention a lot of clad...Has audio variances at least to me to cut down the odds gold ring versus junk as typically gold ring is much heavier than junk such as tabs and foil. Just wanted to see what you fellas thought of the unit and again thanks for the input...
