Todays park finds.

Met up with my hunting buddy at a park for a days worth of hunting. The first few hours were slim pickings, a couple of wheats, the brass barrel spigot at 10" a screamer with a silver high tone. Finally the last couple of hours started producing some decent finds. I dug the war nickle(the blob) at 7" it gave a very high tone and high VDI reading on the CTX coming up at 12/45 13/46, out of the ground it reads 12/45 on the CTX and the same on my buddy's Etrac. The next 5 hits were 3 rings and 3 wheats, the neatest was the tiny baby's ring at 5" with a nice higher tone and VDI of 12/39. The rose ring was in 2 pieces, the ring came out first and I stuck the probe back in the hole and found the other part to it. Overall a decent day in the park.

Dan I have seen nickels come in at 12.45 with iron but once out of the hole they read 12.13 I bet if you clean that crap off of it she should read 12.13 nice hunt . sube

Nice, Dan...

If your hitting wheats, (and baby rings at 5") it's only a matter of time/luck when you'll be showing us lots more silver. :)

By coincidence, one of my finds yesterday was a 1945D war nickel at about 7", as well.

I thought mine looked kind of rough at the time...but it looks pretty good compared to that crusty button of yours. :)
I hope it cleans up well.

I remember the first large cent I found was encrusted worse than that...and I almost threw it away, thinking it was a junk modern coat button.
Glad I kept/cleaned it.
hh,
mike

I think I'm going to leave Mr. Crusty just the way he is, gives it character :) BTW Sube, this park is infested with iron, your posts on iron masking helped me out today, thank you!!

This park has given up quite a bit of silver this past year, it's getting to be slim picking between a couple of Etracs and now a CTX :)

Nah, sube...I think Dan's talking war nickel...silver alloy. Made only during WWII to allow the scarce nickel resources to be used elsewhere for the war effort.

I think mine came in at 12.24 or 12.26. That's about normal, I think?
Right in the middle of junk range, but the sound was so clean, and the target was so small/crisp...I always dig signals like that...hoping for a big gold ring. (usually get can slaw instead)

It is very unusual to see them ring in at 12.45, though...must be some serious crust.

There's something in the soil at this park, all the war nickles give extremely high VDI's my found one in worse shape than mine, his was reading 12/42 12/44 The last one I dug from here came in at 12/39 somewhat clean, at 8" In my hometown park, they read 12/13 12/12

Say, Dan...I'm looking closely at your crusty war nickel, and I'm having trouble telling it from a regular nickel.

Can you see the year on it?

trojdor all my war nickels read 12.13 to 12.15 you must have a lot of silver in yours not like my cheap nickels . sube

Huh...I don't remember seeing a war nickel read that low.
I'll have to dig my others out to check.

I just retested the one I found last night, and it air tests 12.24.
Now you've got me curious....now where did I put the others?
:)

Well, I found a handful of war nickels, and sube...you are indeed correct!

They all rang up exactly 12.13, 12.14, 12.15, just as you predicted. :)

I also retested my 'mutant'...same odd 12.24?

(Dan, sorry for hijacking your post...I'll be quiet now  )

It's above the dome.
Trivia for those that don't know;
Not only was that (war nickels 1942-1945) the only years they put the mint mark above the dome, it was also the first time in history a 'P' mint mark was used on a coin to denote the Philadelphia mint.
