like a good detectorist person I have a bag that I carry with me to put pop tabs and other metal scraps into and I had found the thing in the photos and didn't think much of it cause I was looking for coins, when I got home and went to put it in the scrap bucket and noticed the words, from what I can make out they say RED, comstock, stove and I think Quinn, I think there was more words but they were broke off, I haven't found the other part yet.

I think you may have found part of an old wood stove. here's a link, has the words comstock and quincy.....

That's neat.

I find lots of stove parts but usually no writing.

HH,

I would keep looking in that area for sure.

I thought the same in the park I was at today and finding some pipes and what have you, I figured an old home was on the site and the land was donated for a park.

Finding unusual things in parks depends on what was there before the park was built. Our newest park is over an old landfill. I've found lots of things from the 1860's through the 1940's in the areas that have not been covered with fill dirt. I'm sure even in the new grass there are some really old items. My oldest find there is an 1806 English Penny.

It just shows that there really are no BAD places to search.

The park has been a park for as long as I have known, I could ask my dad if it was anything before that, he is 75 and grew up around here.

A possibility: Lots of gov't-owned land (local/state/fed) was seized from private landowners back in the day for non-payment of property taxes, then overhauled by the Civilan Conservation Corps for use as park/recreation areas.

Old topo maps/parcel maps are invaluable for researching sites, you can find some online or go to your courthouse/library. That's what I do!

I FOUND THE OTHER HALF.....YEA! It was about 15 feet away from where I found the first half, I will post a photo of both halves when I can.
